Come and tell me all your walking adventure plans for the New Year. No matter if you're just making it around the block, walking the pooch or doing the Camino de Santiago.

I'll be exploring the countryside around me and hopefully a further afield, getting a bit fitter and hoping to meet some other local walkers.

Wow those are two amazing efforts! Bone density is a worry for me too @PauliesWalnuts , I must do some weights...

I blooming love walking it has been my go to exercise on and off (motivation dependent) for the last 10 years. It helped me drop a lot of weight previously and I'm back on it this year with the big birthday approaching End of June!

Cannot wait for days to get lighter! So I can go after work, not in the kinda area where its safe for me to walk on my own in the dark! Still doing my half hour each lunchtime, and trying to energise my DH to join in at the weekends. Off to Devon for a cosy cottage week shortly so currently looking for awe inspiring treks down there!

ErrolTheDragon · 31/01/2023 13:59

I've not updated for a couple of weeks, so I'd better tot up my totals as it's Jan 31st. It's been a bit dribs and drabs, DHs foot is still playing him up and we fear it may be chronic.
I make it 58.4 since I last updated so that makes it a round 120km to date.

I want to cry when I read of these wonderful walking routes through the Dales and the like. The best I can say for myself is that my daily average for January is higher than my daily average for December, so I'm going in the right direction, but slowly. Still, a balmy 12 degrees here today, and the quality of the light has definitely changed, so onwards we go! February will be better than January!

A lovely 12km stomp through the Ashdown Forest for me today. Wonderful to feel the sun on my face and have a stretch as this has not been a good walking week for me.

20km and absolutely bitter with icy patches to negotiate- reward with fantastic views , lovely air quality and alpenglow as we finished

ProfYaffle · 05/02/2023 19:19

We did about 7 miles today. Mostly fairly dull farm land but we did go through an old WW2 air base which has now been returned to agricultural use. Found some blast shelters in scrubland so that was interesting.

PauliesWalnuts · 07/02/2023 11:50

I love tramping through history stuff. The Calder Valley is great for Industrial Revolution mooching around. We did a hard 14 mile slog ending up at the Halo above Rossendale on Sunday - timed it perfectly for the amazing sunset too. Needed our head torches for the way down though!

Amazing photo - are you sure you weren't welcoming our alien overlords?

I tried to upload a photo but it's too big for MN to cope with and I lost my temper in attempting to reduce the pixels in Paint Hmm

Just another 3. 5miles around the village today. Snowdrops have really spread and first daffodils fully out in the Churchyard. 17 miles so far this week.

No daffs here yet but plenty of snowdrops and crocuses.
60.9km since my last update brings me to 180.9km so far.

I had no idea about that Halo at Rossendale - I've not been over there for a few years and never at night (I used to spend quite a lot of happy Saturdays on, or in, Clowbridge reservoir when DD was a teenager.Grin)

Hi what a lovely thread can I join? I love walking and live in an area where there is lots of scope for it but working F/T restricts the time ai have to do it. I do walk my lovely dog for about an hour a day and really enjoy that. Would love to increase the walking. Is it too late to register for the 1000 mile challenge now?

MargaritaRita · 16/02/2023 20:03

Lovely thread. I was lucky enough to be in Andalucia last week. Seville, Cordoba, Granada and Malaga. My apple watch told me in no uncertain terms that over 6 days I had walked 85 km. I couldn't believe it as it was just so interesting walking around seeing all those lovely places.

I am 65 and up for it thankfully, no joint issues so am making the most of it while I can!

ProfYaffle · 19/02/2023 16:02

Nice 8.5 miles today around south Norfolk. It was a quirky sign type of day.

@sheepdreams I think you can sign up anytime, you choose your own start date.

We have daffs coming out up here now too.
I've done 60.2 km since last Saturday. Part of this was some sections of the local canal which we've not done before (had cycled some of it in the past). We've decided to make sure we walk all of it, hopefully within the next few weeks of months - we've been meaning to for years!

241.2 km so far.

midgemadgemodge · 19/02/2023 19:55

Snowdrops aconites and crocus round here still

Not sone much this week with visitors

ErrolTheDragon · 26/02/2023 21:46

The wild garlic is coming up now, and there's some blackthorn starting into flower too.
50.5 km walked this week

291.7 km so far.

crosshatching · 27/02/2023 08:48

Beautiful scilla in the woods near me. I had to stop I thought there surely couldn't be bluebells and snowdrops flowering at the same time! I've really battled with late winter blah in the last few weeks but I can feel life returning and managed 10k walk yesterday.

281 km walked so far this year. Mostly keeping to my step count but ready for a change of scenery now.

@ProfYaffle I'm absolutely going to worry about that cat now.

Do not mention wild garlic.. someone planted some in my herb patch, insisting they were chive bulbs. They are not, and were described by the RHS as a thug plant. I am in my third year of digging the baatards out if my front border, autumn and spring. They spread. I won't be buying any compost from the Council.

midgemadgemodge · 27/02/2023 17:30

Seen our first daffs this weekend

Average over 7Km a day - mostly over the weekends

Omg - you're so lucky! I drive to woods half an hour away to pick wild garlic. I tried planting some in my garden but it never took off.

ErrolTheDragon · 06/03/2023 10:39

Only 15.8 km last week, we went away to a wedding this weekend inc Friday

307.5 km so far.

crosshatching · 06/03/2023 10:58

Longest walk of the year so far this weekend at around 10 miles. Enjoyed it at the time but my bum and legs are still feeling it now!
It's been really interesting seeing how cold it's been in some parts than others locally. Basing this entirely on how uneven the appearance of daffodils is this year.
Still feels pretty cold but I can feel that spring surge and starting to plan a lot more walks as the weather improves. Could also do with some more kit to be honest.
