Shin splints

I get shin splints pretty bad when I'm out walking, to the point I can't walk normally because my shin muscles are so tight and sore. Do I just power through them? Do they go away or lessen the fitter you are? Would taping them help? I'd really like to start doing some running to lose weight but am finding it really difficult!

Any advice would be welcome!

I would recommend seeing a physio if you can, often this is related to biomechanics of the foot that is best assessed in person. Shin splints is a stress based bone pain, its generally caused by exercising too much too soon, so it needs rest to recover, review of anything that’s adding to it and then a much gentler return to exercise. If you want to lose weight can you cycle or swim while you recover?

Are your trainers old or worn out? I often feel it in my knees and shins first when mine have done too many miles. Try running on grass or trail rather than tarmac.

Do you take a VitD supplement? I always get sore shins when my levels are low.

In this order:

See a physio: get recs for proper stretches AND the style of shoe/trainer you should wear
New trainers
Stretch, stretch, stretch. Calf stretches mainly for shin splints.

I have them too. Absolute agony sometimes.

I've been taught to do a massage which is essentially long, hard strokes along the shin bone up from the foot.

I don't know how to stop them. I've also been to physio but unfortunately it wasn't helpful.
