What do you do in this weather?

If it's rainy and stormy like it is where I am, what do you do? Rest, do something indoors or put on the waterproof clothing (or not) and get out there anyway?

I'm trying to exercise most days and that was great over the summer but now I'm finding the weather's hindering that. I used to swim for my indoor activity but since covid it's more expensive and you have to book, so less appealing/convenient. And how about cyclists, do you get out there or go on the trainer indoors? Or something else? Anyway, I'd love to hear what everyone does.

Running - just put a long sleeved top on if it's very cold. Running is more popular in the winter than the summer, if anything (partly due to spring marathons) - the weather isn't an issue unless it's very icy.

bigblueyonder · 01/11/2022 07:06

Go running- I have always been able to dry off 😀.

Or use it to do for some indoor strength training, yoga and stretching.

ByeByeMissAmericanPie · 01/11/2022 07:06

I go to classes indoors in my local leisure centre 3-4 times a week.

If you want to go out and remain comfortable, then you’ll probably need to invest in some proper gear for walking/ running/ biking.

Afterfire · 01/11/2022 07:08

I just wear a long waterproof coat and get out for a long brisk walk. We live rurally and it’s muddy and rainy so I wouldn’t want to jog / run but I know and see a lot of people that do. A long brisk walk is still really good exercise.

rubydoobydoo · 01/11/2022 07:14

I still run - I have a shower as soon as I get in anyway so doesn't matter if I get wet. It's only difficult if there's been a lot of snow or the roads and pavements are icy.
Or walk with a brolly on recovery days!

The weather doesn't affect going to the gym so that doesn't change.

ThankYouDebbie · 01/11/2022 07:22

I do a Jillian Michaels workout or yoga in my bedroom. You only really need a yoga mat and then possibly hand weights depending on what workout you're doing.

tulips27 · 01/11/2022 07:28

Runners: do you wear waterproof trainers or socks, or just normal ones and let them get wet? If your trainers get wet through what do you wear the next day? Do you have several pairs?

Loads of workout on YouTube - Caroline Girvan, Growingannanas.

Yup. The only months I don't like are summer.

It's easier to get warm than stay cool.

Regular trainers and socks.

Just leave trainers in the utility room near the radiator. And out scrunched up newspaper in them.

sittingonacornflake · 01/11/2022 07:31

I did an indoor workout at home this morning. A Joe Wicks one off his Body Coach app. If I didn't have childcare issues I'd run outside. Normal trainers. Let them get wet and put them somewhere warm to dry.

lljkk · 01/11/2022 07:47

I may run but indoor swimming is my go to. I have to get value out of swim membership.

Lobelia123 · 01/11/2022 07:50

I pull up a yoga class on Youtube and do some stretching/suppleness training. It really makes for a great change and complements all kinds of other physical activity from running to cycling and swimming, or in my case, horse riding :)

Normal trainers - I don't run every day so they're normally dry or at least nearly dry next time I need them. If not I have a couple of older pairs that will do!

fellrunner85 · 01/11/2022 09:07

Normal running shoes and socks. Waterproof running shoes aren't really a "thing" for a reason- you want running shoes to be breathable and to let any water out, not trap it inside and end up running in hot little puddles.
They dry out fairly quick, but I have different pairs of shoes I rotate anyway.

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 01/11/2022 09:14

I go running but I much prefer it when it’s summer, warm and dry so I seem to be in a minority. I struggle to get warm again after being cold out, showers need to be quick and relatively cool, and my running shoes and socks are utterly sodden even days later and freezing to put on.

I usually end up huddled under blankets and feeling uncomfortable when I’ve been running in cold and wet weather because I just can’t get warm again. Especially my toes. I can’t sleep because I just can’t warm up

xsquared · 01/11/2022 09:35

Running - Only an issue if it's icy and then I don't go.

For rain, I go in normal gear and get wet but if its torrential, I might cut it short.

Normal trainers which get wet, the put scrunched newspaper in. I have two pairs on rotation so I'll wear the other pair the next time I go for a run.

MsMartini · 01/11/2022 09:42

I don't run in proper rain or if very cold (slow, middle aged runner and I worry about falling over). I strength train mainly outside (outdoor gyms) but use my indoor gym if the weather is awful. And I subscribe to les mills on demand which is brilliant - huge range of classes and really good stress-busting workouts for horrid weather.

I try not to run in heavy rain but agree with pp - wear normal clothes (which in my case involves fleeces, gloves and hats) and shoes and if weather dodgy I make sure my run is door-to-door so straight into hot shower afterwards. I don't usually run two days on the trot but usually have one trail and one normal pair of trainers on the go anyway, so could swap.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 01/11/2022 09:44

I run - skin is waterproof!

BogRollBOGOF · 01/11/2022 12:41

It's strong winds or ice that put me off more than wet itself. That said I have a bit flex in the week to shift runs and open water swims to days that suit me better.

Good clothing helps a long way and it's keeping the cold at bay more than the wet itself that matters.

There's not many days where it really is too grim out to cancel all outdoor plans.

BlueChampagne · 01/11/2022 12:49

I commute by bike and take a change of clothes. The only things that make me think twice are snow and gale force winds, which tend not to last very long.

LovelyBitOfSquirrel69 · 01/11/2022 12:50

I can't run any more but when I did I would go out in all weathers. You're going to shower when you get back anyway so what does it matter?

Now, I use my gym membership for swimming or spin classes. But I do swim outdoors all year round and walk the dog in all weathers.

meateatingveggie · 01/11/2022 16:21

I walk.. brisk enough to need running kit, so no coat etc. I wear my usual leggings and long sleeve too and sometimes a lightweight waterproof but rain isn't my problem. It's the wind. I hate it whether it's raining or not.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 01/11/2022 16:23

Still run. I do have some trainers with winterised uppers, but mostly I just get my feet wet.

I've got a terrible running shoe addiction anyway - so have about 40 pairs to rotate 😬

gwenneh · 01/11/2022 16:27

Waterproof clothing and go on.
I ride horses, and there's an indoor arena so the time I spend out in the weather is really just bringing in/turning out.
