Winter running jacket

Completed the c25k back in March and pleased to say I've kept up with the running and am really enjoying. This will be my first winter as a 'runner' and I'm trying to work out if I need a waterproof running jacket 20000 mm type , or whether to focus on just a running jacket with good high viz like the proviz which isn't properly waterproof but would give another layer and some protection. My current waterproof makes me feel like I'm running in a big bag as it's too big and I just feel sweaty in it.
I do night runs with a running club, and morning runs with running friends on weekend mornings.

That's good to know!

I've got a reflective jacket made out of that silver stuff and I've been cycling in it tonight (less exertion than running, for me anyway) and when I came back and took it off, it was wet with sweat. It doesn't seem breathable at all.

I often run for a couple of hours.
My cold, wet weather method is wearing close fitting layers and a light jacket to delay the wet going through so I'm already warm. If it's mild, I accept the wetness. The main benefit of a waterproof/ resistant layer is keeping the windchill off.
I agree with a cap.

Bright, neon colours are good for dull weather. Reflective is useful when it's dark enough for others to put their lights on.

Decathlon normally have good options.

DH has a zip top from ON Running for this exact situation. Very light, reflective, and goes in the washing machine with the rest of the sports gear.

Those harrier jackets look good - which one do you have @Indoctro ?

@Slowgrowingelm

This one

I also have a BTR sport reflective gillet which is WAY cheaper that proviz and in my eyes much better as the back is reflective too. It's a better design.

I'm quite a sweaty Person and I wore it yesterday in pouring rain and 10 degrees and was comfortable and I did 9 miles

I also have the Scott RC jacket but they are expensive, I use when up in the hills.

It's very waterproof and lightweight

I've run in all weathers for 15 years. I've never owned a running jacket.

For me along sleeved technical running top, with a t-shirt under when it's cold is adequate, even in the rain. They're designed to dry quickly and they do their job.

Most running jackets aren't waterproof and are too warm to run in IMO.

Good advice is to dress for the 2nd mile. You'll be chilly when you set off but if you're not, you'll feel overdressed within 10/15 mins.

Slowgrowingelm · 27/10/2022 09:36

Thanks @Indoctro it looks perfect (and a lot cheaper than the one I had my eye on). I quite often run to a destination, I may not be heading home (via tube/public transport) for hours later so I do need to stay dry.

Years and years ago I had a lightweight hooded waterproof with sleeves you could take off. Very odd design, the sleeves were connected from shoulder to shoulder along my back, each arm was connected via zip. Once I got to grips with it I could unzip them on the run and tie them round my waist, kept my core dry but let out a lot of excess heat. I’ve not seen anything similar since 😆

These are all such helpful replies. Really appreciate it!

I love my proviz cycling jacket for visibility at night but my 2 year old one rips incredibly easily and while I've used stick on nylon on the inside to repair the rips it's rather disappointing given how expensive the jacket was.

I have a waterproof jacket that I only wear if it's absolutely chucking it. I'm in Essex so never super cold, and my long runs are about 12 miles so I'm not out for hours.
Instead I prefer close fitting tops in the rain so they don't flap (thumb holes help)
