Running at night - head torch woes

TheOrigRights · 21/10/2022 10:15

I am an experienced night runner.
I have a head torch which works well, BUT I have to wear a hat or Buff (as a beanie) otherwise it doesn't stay put and rubs my ears.
It's currently too warm to wear anything on my head so I've been using my chest torch, but I don't like the way the beam moves when I run so I'm keen to use my head torch.

Am I missing a trick? I suppose I could fashion a head band out of a Buff and see how that works. I have lots of hair.

I wear a Bondi band under my head torch. It's still a little warm, but I haven't found anything better.

TheOrigRights · 22/10/2022 21:44

Thank you. I will have a look at those. If they stay put then it's a compromise I would be willing to make.
It's just SO warm at night at the moment.
My high viz stuff is all long sleeved/legged.

I wear a buff too. Just doesn’t work without

Mochacino · 23/10/2022 13:08

I gave up. I can tolerate a headband but nothing else on my head. Went cross body light and never looked back.

Greybeardy · 23/10/2022 20:06

have you tried a chest light?

Yup, I've said this in my OP

Sorry! That’ll teach me to skim read!

Led headband would it be too warm for these. I use the beanie version and find the light good.

RunningFromInsanity · 23/10/2022 21:04

Does your head torch have an over the top strap aswell? I find that that helps keep mine in place. I do usually wear a headband under mine though for comfort

For running in pitch dark? I've got one of those hats and don't find it bright enough.

That's a thought, thanks. No, mine's just a band. Maybe Buff as headband and top strap might work.
I won't worry about what sort of state my hair will be if it rains!

Have you tried a different head-torch? Perhaps one which has the battery pack on the back, so the weight isn't on your forehead? Or one of the tiny petzl bindi headtorches - They're so small and lightweight that they don't need anything under them

Thank you! Those are really good ideas.
My current Petzl Tikkina is 300 lumens while the Bindi is only 200 and I don't want anything less bright than what I have, but the thin strap looks great.
I've borrowed someone's lamp with the batteries on the back and I didn't like the pulling feeling.

Gosh I'm fussy!
I probably need to go to a shop and try some.
Meanwhile I'm sure it'll get cooler and I'll be fine with my Buff and Tikkina.

One to consider is the Ay Up light. Has a top strap so doesn’t move about and is like a helicopter search beam. Two lights so can angle one at your feet and one along the path.

SomethingToldTheWildGeese · 24/10/2022 21:07

Fair enough. I love the bindi, but only if I'm doing a quick 5k. It's really bright but doesn't last over an hour. If I want to be out on the fells I'll always take a batteries one

ReviewingTheSituation · 24/10/2022 21:12

I wear a buff like a headband and then my torch on top. Works well.

emmathedilemma · 24/10/2022 21:12

580 lumens, USB rechargeable and top band. I can wear it without a buff but it’s better with one. alpkit.com/products/qark-usb-rechargeable-head-torch

In my starting stage of workout, I also running in the nighttime, later I realized nighttime workout will affect our body health. So, I quit my nighttime running workout. Every day Now I am running more than 10 kms to keep my body fit and strong. Every day running workout is supports me to lose more body weight and also helps to keep my body healthy.

TheOrigRights · 09/11/2022 13:24

What's wrong with running at night?

Given the hours of daylight in winter some of us don't have much choice but to run in the dark if we work fulltime! It doesn't have to be "night time", i wore my headtorch on the run home from work yesterday because the street lighting and condition of the pavements is so bad and i left before 5pm.

emmathedilemma · 09/11/2022 13:25

Nothing @TheOrigRights !! Yet another ridiculous suggesting from the PP (along with a recent one about wearing loose cotton clothing instead of leggings! 😂)

TheOrigRights · 09/11/2022 13:27

I LOVE running in the dark. I live rurally and I find I feel safer than day time running as I can see the car lights.

And yes, not running in the dark would limit things somewhat from Oct to Feb/March!

Oh that was them, was it?
Yeah the LAST thing I would wear in the rain is loose fitting clothing. Flip flap flop of wet, cold clothes....nice!
