Sports and ahem, leakage

WantToKnowAnswers · 02/10/2022 11:20

Massive apologies for horrible subject.

I like to do high impact sports but am finding lately that I am having a lot of leakage.

Can anyone recommend some products or sports briefs that can make it a bit less embarrassing?

Do you mean wee? Modibodi pants would probably work but it's something you should also get treatment for - you don't have to put up with it!

PauliesWalnuts · 02/10/2022 11:33

I use M&S light absorbency period pants for running and climbing (also use them towards the end of my period). I’m not too bothered when I run (only do 5ks in early morning) but if I’m up a route on the climbing wall and need to cough or sneeze (damn climbing chalk!) they are a lifesaver.

WantToKnowAnswers · 02/10/2022 12:35

Incredible, what treatment can I get?

I wasn't sure if I could refer to wee. It seems that you can't say anything on here without being accused of being a wierdo.

By treatment I mean physiotherapy to strength your pelvic floor. There are probably other possibilities too - have you seen your dr?

Blueuggboots · 04/10/2022 18:21

How old are you? I've found my leakage has got worse with menopause.

Canggu · 05/10/2022 01:25

You should address the incontinence now. There are specific exercises you can do, a more advanced version of Kegel. Book a session with a specialised physio and do them. The issue is already impacting your life restricting the type of activity you want to do.

TheOrigRights · 05/10/2022 22:35

Yes, address the leaks, you shouldn't accept it as your lot in life as you get older.
I am 52, run and race and also leak.
I did get seen by a continence nurse who was lovely. Ruled out anything bad, and so I am working on my pelvic floor (I have the Squeezy app which reminds me to do my exercises 3 times a day, and takes you through them.
I also use my mooncup any time of the month which raises the angle of the urethra and maintains pressure.
The exercises have really helped.

As pp say, definitely don’t have live with it. Immune has all but gone but I do run in modibodi 24 hours pants (as I have then for periods anyway) to put my mind at ease. I feel over and landed hard on my bottom with a very full bladder and definitely had more than a leak… the pants totally coped and nothing leaked till I got home. Changed my life having them!

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 05/10/2022 22:42

I went to GP and consultant... they weren't in the slightest bit interested. Just said it wasn't that bad and offered nothing else...

MarigoldPetals · 05/10/2022 22:43

There are many types of incontinence pads available - Tesco’s are good.
They are a great solution. Similar to using a pad for your period.
A more eco alternative but very expensive are the pee/period pants you can buy.
It all depends on your budget.
Keep up with the pelvic floor squeezes but honestly I find the pads the best solution for me. As do so many women.

mondaytosunday · 05/10/2022 22:44

Sleek make incontinence pants which look like period pants. Google them.

You can do pelvic floor exercises - there is advice on the NHS website.

Cismyfatarse · 05/10/2022 22:45

I have just had Bulkamid which has totally fixed this. Waited ages but got it on the NHS and it is amazing. No more leaks. I am even going back to Zumba!

Pads aren't very good when you're doing high impact sport, and depending on how old OP is and her medical history, I think these would be something to use after trying to fix the problem itself.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 06/10/2022 08:29

@MarigoldPetals I do pelvic floor muscle
Exercises and it hasn't helped.

GP isn't interested so I wear pads. They're thin and discreet but it's annoying that I have to wear them. I'm pleased to hear what other women have more sympathetic GPs but for those saying we don't have to put up with this... it's not quite that simple if GP not bothered. It's seen as something we have to put up with. I told my GP it was worse when I had a cold as the coughing caused more leakage. The answer was to put up with it until the cold passed!

Could you see a different GP?

nannybeach · 06/10/2022 08:44

After 4 DKs early menopause, yup, while doing high impact aerobic workout, and running. I do PC excercises every single day. You can have Botox jabs , what I do,is insert a tampon, none applicator type, and that works.

TheOrigRights · 06/10/2022 08:46

I was referred to the continence clinic by a nurse not a GP.

TheOrigRights · 06/10/2022 09:22

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn A quick google indicates that you can self refer in many areas. Have you looked into that?

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 06/10/2022 09:24

Depends how much you are leaking. I use a normal panty liner to keep the drips at bay.

YukoandHiro · 06/10/2022 09:25

Google the Esemella Chair

FlorrieFosdyke · 06/10/2022 09:49

I highly recommend this: www.stressnomore.co.uk/contiform-vaginal-pessary-82820.htm

I don't have just a little leakage but full on urinary flooding. This works wonders for me!

slightlysoreboobs · 09/10/2022 07:27

I swear I don’t work for them and I don’t know how to link but Google Kegel 8. It sounds scary and horrible - machine with a probe you insert and it uses a very mild electrical current to stimulate muscles and make them contract - but honestly it doesn’t hurt. I had significant leakage despite doing normal pelvic floor exercises and this thing totally stopped it. I just got the cheapest one available too! Don’t be fobbed off by medics who just shrug and say incontinence in women is normal - it might be common but it is not ok and we don’t have to put up with it!

eggsandbaconeveryday · 02/11/2022 10:02

I was fobbed off with a leaflet for over 10 years but after a change in GP I have now been seen by the incontinence service and referred to urology. I use pads daily and through the night and have found Always to be the best. I am also going to try a combo of leak pants and pads for exercise because that can be the worst time. Please try again with a different GP , it can make such a difference
