Should I try a 10k

I've just started running 5k regularly, I'm slow and can probably run for about 4 minutes before needing to walk for a bit. There's a 10k in 6 months time, I'm tempted but don't know if it'll be too much of a stretch? I'm very overweight but loving running at the moment.

Absolutely go for it. Good luck!

Yes definitely! That’s plenty of time to train.

6 Mths is plenty of time to build up to it! Especially if you're regularly doing 5k.

If it's a 10k that is on every year you can usually look up the results to give you an idea what times people have previously taken. Just be aware that if it takes place on roads and closures are in place there may be a cut off to get a certain distance by a set time.

Good luck!

Thanks all. That's a great idea to look up times. Gosh I feel nervous about how far it is!

Maybe just aim to finish it and don't worry about time - getting to the line is an accomplishment in itself!

Use an app to help you train well, intermittent running for duration and speed will help you improve in a way that is really satisfying and makes you feel like your improving.

Good luck!

If you're slow and going to run/walk it then check if there's a cut off time (there will be in most road races). You've got loads of time to train but I would focus on being able to run 5k non-stop before you start increasing your distance. Have you done c25k to increase your running intervals? Loosing weight will also help.

Hi everyone. I have just entered myself into a 10k race in 3 weeks time and suddenly really nervous.

It's my first race and I am doing it alone. Have run 10k before twice - once at a time of 1hr 10 and once at a time of 1hr 12. I am really worried that I'll be one of the last to finish! I looked up results of other years events and only a few out of 709 finishing after the 1hr 15 mark which realistically will be me.

What's the atmosphere like during a race? Will I feel wick for being so slow?!!!

It's pretty common to take up to 90 mins to run a 10k. 1:10- 1:15 means you'll have company out there.
