Anyone fancy running 5k a day for 30 days?

Just that really. Looking for an accountability buddy. I know it's not good to run every day long term, but curious to see how I will feel after 30 days of 5ks.

Why though? Just why? Such non-specific training isn't going to do you any good.
If I ran so few miles my fitness would fall off a cliff; whereas if you're not used to running that far then you'll just be knackered.

A constant 5k a day would be good for nobody.

They told you why. They're curious to see how they feel after the 30 days.

Well, if they're not used to running that distance they'll feel tired. If they're used to running more, they'll feel restless. But if you're actually wanting to get better at running then it won't do any good.

You're not running enough for it to have any gains in terms of endurance or stamina; no rest days mean you'll never recover properly; and unless you shake up the terrain and speed you won't gain strength or pace either.

As a weird experiment (say, like, how would you feel if you ate only potatoes for a month) I suppose it might have some interest.

I injurrd myself doing ths.

I probably walk more than 5km most days and tend to run 5km or more 3 times a week but no way would i run 5km every day just because of the sweaty hair and washing i'd have to do!

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 22/09/2022 08:28

I am trying to run 5k every other day, and will try to gradually build back up to 10k, but I never have fewer than 2 rest days a week.

When people do Run Every Day challenges its possible to have "rest" days built in by doing a long run on day1, day4, day7 etc, a very short (1-2k) run early in the morning on day2, day5, day8 etc, and also a very short run on day3, day6, day9 etc but late as possible in the evening. You then get nore than 24hrs rest once every 3 days ao long as you take it easy when not running. Doing 5k every day doesn't sound wise.

I injured myself running 5k on consecutive days (not even every day). Be careful.

megletthesecond · 22/09/2022 08:46

I know someone who did this and he shaved lots of time off his parkrun pb. I'd do it if I had time.

This isn’t wise, you need rest days

BogRollBOGOF · 23/09/2022 09:25

I've done Run Every Day January but varied my distances, so my "rest days" would be a gentle mile or two. Being used to running up to HM, I tend to think of 5k as being short, but it doesn't take many days (about 4-5) for it to really stack up.

By the end of the month, I was fitter and faster after a few rest days. I've done a Feb HM and found that I had the stamina in me to find a couple of long runs with good recovery quite easy in comparison.

I wouldn't do a streak of 5ks though, too repetitive, draining and an injury risk. Doing a streak if you're fit with a good long term base fitness and carefully consider your active recovery is doable though.

Chap in our run club did a "5k everyday for a month" challenge - he was a novice runner and did a run walk combo everyday - basically did a 40-60 min run walk each lunchtime

He did get through it but didn't think it really helped him long term

You need rest days (where you just do a mile if you are really on a RED streak) and variation in surface/length/type

YeOldeTrout · 23/09/2022 20:51

I had a boss who ran 10 miles almost every day for decades. He insisted he was fine but he kind of jumped around the place on the very rare day he had off running.

I'd injure myself if I ran 5 km/day, but might consider a different kind of challenge. Cold weather means I want to get back into running soon.

That makes more sense than 5k a day though. I mean if you're a seasoned runner with years of experience, than a decent length run every day would seem sensible (ish - though a day or two cross training instead of running would be my preference). 10 miles would only be between an hour and an hour and a half.
And that would amount to a 70 mile week, which is a fair amount but not at the top end of what quality runners are doing week in, week out.

Whereas the 5k a day is a very short run for an experienced runner, but probably a challenge for a new runner. If the experienced runner did 5k a day then that sort of short, non-specific training would just lead to losing fitness, and be pointless. Unless they perhaps wanted a month of downtime due to having run an ultra or something.
On the flip side, if a new runner did 5k a day then they might build some endurance - but would likely just get injured due to lack of rest days. It's a silly challenge and doesn't make sense.
Run Every Day - fine, if you shake it up. Run 5k a Day - not so much.
