YouTube weights workout suggestions?

I’m trying to find something that is the right level (essentially beginner) and engaging.

I have a barbel, but no dumbbells. I run 3 times a week, but want to do weights too. I’ve tried some, but they are always too long or too hard or just too boring 🤣

If you’ve not done weight before you’d be best going to a class or have PT if you can afford it. It’s tough when you haven’t got the equipment.

You could join a gym? I like the Strength Hut on Instagram for workouts

I don’t have the money for that. My barbel has different level plates. Is that not enough?

I’ve done body pump classes when I was a gym member a few years ago. I know how to do deadlifts, rows, squats etc.

What area do you want to focus on improving? Full body, upper or lower body strength?

You could build your own program rather than following videos, then you can focus on improving. Ideally you want to do a routine for 2-3 months rather than changing all the time.

Hmmm, I'm not sure. I'm trying to lose weight (I know it is mostly diet!) and running again after a long illness/injury. But I know that at my age (41) strength is good for weight loss and also good for me (as perimenopausal). I gained 3 stone last year due to not being able to exercise (from previously being a runner/cyclist) and also because of being on steroids for my illness.

I just want to be fitter and healthier (and hopefully a bit thinner!)

There’s loads you can do with a barbell: squats, lunges, bench press, bent over row, shoulder press, hip thrusts etc.

Maybe you could try a few to see what you like? With my routines I start high reps/low weights and progress to low reps/high weights. The weight should be high enough to make the last 2-3 reps in a set challenging but not impossible (or too easy).

If you track your progress you can make sure you’re improving, but you don’t want to go super heavy straight away.

I got a Les Mills subscription yesterday, £52 for the year.
Decathlon has cheap weights :)

I use Les mills to exercise at home - as well as bodypump it has a new strength programme. Not as expensive as a gym. I've seen Caroline Girvan mentioned a few times on here.

Have you tried the fiton app? If you have a smart TV you can download it straight on there. There are loads of workouts under a wide range of categories. I think there is an option to pay but all the ones I've done so far have been free.

Look up their channels.

What weight are your plates - I'm wondering if you have a body pump type set where there's a bar and 2x 5kg, 2x 2.5 kg and 2x 1.25 kg. If so, I'd look at getting a Les Mills + subscription and doing the body pump classes if you used to like them at the gym.

I really like Zeus Fitness on Youtube. He uses dumbbells a lot but you could just use the weight plates without the bar, assuming they're the type with holes that you can use like handles.

There’s some free Les Mills body pump on YouTube. I also use Brooke Rosenbauer or Glen Eira Leisure on YouTube for their body pump.
