Running in the heat

xsquared · 17/07/2022 08:19

I will be going before 6 in the morning as it'll still be manageable for me where I am, with a visor and sunglasses.

It will be a relatively short run, as I'm doing speed intervals.

I'm also going to try soaking my top with cold water first before I head out.

If you run in all weathers, please add your tips for running in the heat.

I have a cooling towel.

I'll also take water with me. But I'll freeze it over night.

Chocolateteabag · 19/07/2022 12:48

Go out as early as you can
Go slower than normal
Don't be too proud to stop and walk if you start feeling at all dizzy

And today? sack it off entirely - not worth it!
I'll do some Pilates later and wait for the cooler weather tomorrow

sinpan · 19/07/2022 21:38

Freeze bottle of water and take at least double what you expect to take
Wear light coloured loose clothing - no tight black gym wear, it absorbs heat
Choose a route under trees and close to water - avoid city streets if possible, they're always hotter

If you're going to be exposed to the sun, even for short periods, wear a hat, and sun cream of course
Slow down and avoid hills if you can
For the hottest part of your run, try to schedule stops where you can refill your bottle/wet your head/buy an ice lolly
Over 25c - stay at home or if you must go out, at least have a back up plan

Agree with Chocolateteabag, evrything you can do to lower your temperature will help but sometimes it's better not to go out at all. I did see runners where I am this morning at 6am, but all gone by 9am.

How did you find it xsquared?

xsquared · 20/07/2022 08:50

Thank you everyone.

I didn't go running at all yesterday as it was already too hot just to walk to work at around 8ish.

It wasn't too bad at all on Monday @sinpan as I headed out before 6am and did what I said I'd do in my op. I was doing a speed workout and it definitely felt tougher as it got warmer.

Today I walked 1 mile to meet my running partner and had a very pleasant, chilled paced run. It was 18°C then but felt so fresh and cool after yesterday!

I always start my running workout in the morning time, because it will makes me so calm and cool. I like it very much. I never likes to run in the hot weather.

MintJulia · 10/08/2022 13:12

I go out at 6am. I'm in Hampshire, and temperature at the time seems to be about 15 degrees which is perfect for me. I drink a litre of fluid before I go, and run for about 40 mins, half of it in woodland/shade.

No problems so far.

Iamblossom · 10/08/2022 13:17

Hampshire here too - I run between 7.30 and 9am and don't have any issues. Don't need to take water.

Only time I have felt it too hot to run is abroad. Cyprus in May for example was not fun. Won't be bothering next week in Corfu either. Good for my bod to have some time off.

TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 11/08/2022 14:43

I'm in Shropshire and out by 7am as it's just unbearable if not. I've always said I prefer winter running, the heat makes it twice as hard!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 11/08/2022 14:52

I'm not an early bird so I just have to suffer the heat.

Yesterday I waited til 8.30pm. Today I'm off out at 6pm.

I might try to get up early tomorrow to do my intervals. But mostly likely I'll do them at 11am and just drink during the recovery bit.

PrixChoc · 12/08/2022 15:03

I was out at 9am with morning (this is early for me). I went to a different park that has tree lined paths so running in the shade and ran a bit slower than normal.

I actually found it easier this morning than last week when it was horribly humid.

flyingant · 12/08/2022 15:07

Electrolytes

NatMoz · 12/08/2022 15:26

I'm doing parkrun tomorrow. Opting for the shadiest one local to me and taking a bottle of water to prevent exhaustion.

Lifeadmin · 12/08/2022 15:29

Ive decided not to do park run tomorrow, the shady one will be rammed and the one out in the open will be too hot.

TheBikiniExpert · 12/08/2022 15:29

I'm in Italy and go at 6am for 30 minutes, mostly shady. I don't take water but there is a fountain on my route if I need it. Can't wait for autumn!

greenacrylicpaint · 13/08/2022 17:13

anyone has a tip against chafing?

for some reason the heat makex it worse, especially around the arms. tried body lotion but that feels unpleasantly sweaty.

Spudlet · 13/08/2022 17:17

I add electrolytes to my water when it gets hot, and take extra gels as I find it saps my
energy more. And I aim to be out the door by 6am.

Asda liquid talc is good for chafing, and I will even stick the tube in my hydration pack so I can reapply if needs be.

I am also a trail runner which is cooler than the roads, and I’ll head for the woods when it’s hot.

ReviewingTheSituation · 13/08/2022 17:20

Vaseline. Anywhere and everywhere you might need it!

I put it on the ends of all my toes before a long run (12m plus), then under the front centre of my bra strap and under the clasp at the back (if I'm wearing a backpack, which I will be in the heat), and then at the top of my arms which have at odd times in the past rubbed (against what, I don't know - I have skinny arms!).

Body lotion won't do anything- it just soaks in. You need a lubricant/barrier. It's not glamorous running a long way in the heat!

Hungryharriet · 13/08/2022 17:24

Honestly, just wait until it cools down. According to the forecast that should be from Monday.

EATmum · 13/08/2022 17:29

The salt in your sweat crystallises on your skin, which is why you can get odd sores in this heat. Vaseline (or Vicks chest rub ...) is the only way to avoid it. Apply liberally to feet and bra band line.
