what is your running routine?

I aim for 30 minutes non-stop running, twice a week. NHS recommendation is 75 minutes so I feel I should run for longer, physically I could probably do it but I am bored after 30 minutes max!

If you run for exercise, how often per week do you run and for how long, and how do you deal with boredom while running?

I run four times per week, anything from 40 mins to 2 hours depending on what I'm training for. I entertain myself with a mix of podcasts, chatting to people in my running club and beautiful trails. If you do want to increase, build up steadily and think about adding in some strength work as it really helps.

Hi. I've built up my running over 5 years. Off season (not training for big goal races) I'll run 4 times a week and do a bit of weight training and yoga inbetween.

I love listening to music while running solo or with my running group for a chat and doing different sessions. E.g. interval sessions, hill reps, tempo (Google it, Runners World probably has info). Having a variety of running speeds will keep it interesting/challenging and improve your overall health and speed.

Have you considered following a suitable online plan and training for a fast 5k or running up to 10k race? I was hooked after that first race with crowds and finishers medal!

Hi there, I run 3 times a week. Twice for 30/35 mins and once for an hour (want to improve my distance and stamina so attempting to increase with one longer run per week). I don't really get bored, I tend to have that 'mindfulness' thing at the fore in my head. Just trying to 'feel' the ground, steps, shoes, freedom of movement. Instead of conquering boredom, I have to conquer thinking about my breathing - because when I think about it, I can't manage it! Same with my steps - when I think about my pace/count steps/ I suddenly find it really difficult to remain upright and stable rather than like a dodgem car banging off hedges etc... It is entirely possible, I'm not the sort of person to be giving anyone 'advice' about running. Sorry.

I run 3 x 5km a week which for me is 3x 38 minutes! I sometimes listen to podcasts but I run faster to music.

myladybelle · 15/07/2022 18:17

3 times 5k!

Thanks for replying!
@UnaOfStormhold and @Tiddlywinkly , how do you manage to talk while running?? I've seen people doing that and I totally can't do it! If I talk and run at the same time I'd be out of breath in a minute.

I run with a club, hardly ever run on my own. A training session mid week, parkrun on Saturdays (or volunteering) and a longer run on Sundays. It was only during lockdown that I did any amount of running from home on my own but now the gym has reopened that’s dropped off again.

UnaOfStormhold · 15/07/2022 20:01

Basically you just need to slow down! A rule of thumb is that 80% of your running should be done at a pace where you can hold a conversation. It may feel incredibly slow to you, maybe not even faster than a walk, but it still has huge benefits and if you keep doing it you will get faster.

If it's not burning hot 37 degree sun 🤣 i run 3 times a week, usually try between 5-7 miles with the pram twice a week and a Saturday Parkrun. I also sometimes do an interval training session with my running club.

Off to parkrun tomorrow and bagging a 'P'. Got very into the parkrun challenges although the name one for me will be hard as i have a 'Z' in my name 😱

fellrunner85 · 15/07/2022 20:10

I run 4-5 times a week.
Two of those will be short runs of 3-4 miles, so 20 to 35 mins depending on how fast I'm going.

One longer run of an hour to an hour and a half
And then my long run of 2 to 4 hours, depending on what I'm training for. I don't tend to get bored, as I like the peace and time to myself, but I sometimes listen to podcasts on the longest runs.

I run 9-10km a day for about an hour. Every day. It takes a LOT of effort but the endorphins are so worth it.

I now try to swap some running for strength training.

FlySwimmer · 15/07/2022 20:19

Podcasts podcasts podcasts! I have a rotation of shows I listen to while running; I’m injured currently but was running 3 x week, 5-7k per run before. My running meant I was extremely up to date on this emerging coronavirus back in early 2020 Wink And I was also extremely informed about the American election primaries, haha. I miss it! I find it harder to listen now without that time.

OrangeBananaFish · 15/07/2022 20:45

Saturday - parkrun. Sometimes I push myself, other times I take it easy depends on how I feel and my aim. If I'm doing a new course (I'm a bit of a tourist at 36 different events)
Sunday - Long run. Anything from 6-10 miles.
Monday - slow, steady chatty run. 3 miles or so
Tuesday - 10K with a group around a hilly route
Thursday - club session

I might not do every session every week, but they are my main sessions. I mostly run with others, but not always. I only very very occasionally have music to run with, but more often than not its just me and my thoughts.

Running to the bathroom

BogRollBOGOF · 15/07/2022 23:02

Normally 2-4 times per week with a longer run of 1-2 hours depending on the race season.

I don't get bored, I've got an extensive array of routes covering countryside trail through to the city centre. If I go 10mi+ I can cover suburbs, industrial, river, city, park, village and woods on one run! I'm currently injured so haven't done more than 25mins pure running in 6 months which is frustratingly limited.

I like music, podcasts and Zombies Run!

I really need running, body and mind.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 16/07/2022 17:19

Personally if you’re not running much I’d ignore the 80% rule. The coach that introduced the concept himself has said it was made with people doing 60+ miles a week in mind, who do recovery runs, not people running a few times a week for half an hour.

I run a lot because I like it and I like winning races but my week is usually
Monday: easy 5k with a few strides/drills thrown in
Tuesday: hill rep session
Wednesday: insanely slow run. Usually 12/14 min mile pace.
Thursday: long reps session - usually 5 miles of effort about 8/9 miles in total
Friday: absolutely nothing
Saturday: parkrun
Sunday: long run session (usually 3x5k over 15/16 miles) or a race

whosaidtha · 16/07/2022 17:30

I'm training for my first 10K after baby3 so I do one 10K. One interval run to increase my speed and one slow run with a friend - very slow as we chat. I also usually do park run. Apart from running with my friend I listen to music. I made a super playlist so pretty good. Podcasts are good too but do make me slower for some reason.
I also do weight based exercise two times a week.

Totally forgot about zombie run. Used to do that a few years ago. Might download it again!
