Has anyone taken up ice skating as an adult?

I’ve always wanted to be able to ice skate, but other than the occasion public session sticking close to the wall as a child, I never learned. I’m seriously considering booking a block of lessons now and was wondering if anyone else has picked it up as an adult?

My closest ice rinks (I believe) are Telford and Uttoxeter, so if anyone has any knowledge of those rinks or other suggestions that would great. Distance wise either is fine, but Uttoxeter has availability at a more convenient time, so leaning that way unless there’s a reason not too!

I did the Learn To Skate programme as an adult, I got to level 6 before I changed jobs and couldn't go any more. I bloody loved it, so much fun and fantastic exercise. Go for it.

Depends how coordinated you are. I used to visit the ice rink occasionally as a child. I could skate without holding on to the side but wouldn't say I was great as I didn't go often enough.

As an adult, a friend suggested we went to the mid week adults only session. (Telford as it happens). I went along as I far preferred to be on the ice without teenagers whizzing around me. They included a group lesson in the session and I quickly learned to skate on one foot and go backwards. Then friend had an op and we stopped going. A while later another friend said she wanted to try as her DS was keen to go skating and she wanted to give it a go first. Thank goodness she did. She was totally uncoordinated, ended up in a group of her own in the lesson bit and even then failed to manage to skate and actually fell quite heavily on her bum and probably cracked a rib (although she never got an x-ray). She would have been an absolute liability in a busy public session trying to help a small child.

Do Telford offer ice hockey?

The last time I was on the ice I broke my leg.

Yes I did! Then I got pregnant again and had to stop however fully intent to start again once baby is here. On bronze now after passing all my badges. I found it so much fun x

Me! It’s an incredible sport, it’s SO satisfying when you learn something new. Although the falls can hurt a little, maybe get some knee and bum pads! I haven’t experienced those rinks but I’d recommend signing up to learn to skate, lots of them run adult courses.

Having moved to Canada I thought I would embrace winter sports. I signed up for adult skating lessons. I was doing quite well - I had gained enough confidence to stay away from the sides and could skate in the centre of the rink quite happily. And then I slipped and fell. I broke my wrist.

My friend took it up as an adult after her children started ice hockey and is now in a figure skating team. She absolutely loves it!
