Gentle exercise for buggered knees.

I'm very overweight. Like walking and swimming but very very bad at carving out time. I start a new career working from home tomorrow and would like to find some kind of stretching exercises that don't involve my knees or lying on the floor.

Ideally something like a few stretches or yoga poses that can be done in a very small space. And take less than 15 minutes.

I also have a displaced coccyx which is excruciating!! And prolapses.

Sorry I appreciate I'm asking the impossible. I used to sporty and now I'm square!

Sorry I don't have any advice, but wanted to say I'll be watching this thread as I'm similar to you. I'm really overweight and terrible at making time, or having the motivation to exercise! I hope you find something that works for you.

What are you wanting to achieve? If you have so little time to spare then you want exercises that give you the most bang for your buck. A few general stretches might feel nice but that's about it.

Once you have decided on your aim you should be able to get info about recommended exercises and can then tailor from there to what you can do/have time for.

Also following! Terrible knees. Can't kneel down or put any weight or stress on them! Would love to "tone up" somehow! Looked at Joe Wicks and my knees were trembling at the thought of it.

@GallstoneGlory to feel a bit less creaky and a bit more stretchy. It's not about getting fit. It's about feeling a bit more comfortable with a pretty kippered body.

My knee caps have fissures across them so kneeling and squatting are not a good plan. But bending one and stretching the other would be doable.

Kind of the stretching equivalent of breast stroke and walking I guess.

I agree it all sounds a bit pathetic and pointless.

YouTube 'desk workouts'. There's a multitude of workouts and stretches you can do sitting in your seat and a lot of them are short videos

GallstoneGlory · 01/06/2022 13:32

@Wallywobbles no, it doesn't sound pathetic and pointless and I didn't mean to give that impression. It's just that it's very easy to do something that is pretty much useless and it's always best to start with what you expect/hope to achieve and then work out how to get there. In your case I agree with the suggestion to look up desk workouts and try a few of those. I also suggest looking up exercises they typically recommend after abdominal surgery, simply because they do actually get you moving but can be done lying on your bed and will concentrate on your lower body more than the desk workouts probably would. You can also try looking up exercises to do if you have arthritic knees or if you have had knee surgery. I appreciate that doesn't apply to you but it will give you movements to have a go at while sparing the joint. For example:

I think you would get the most bang for your buck if you could go and see a physiotherapist and ask them for some suitable exercises. You'd need to make it clear you are not going with a view to them fixing a particular problem but rather to help you get some ideas of how to move within your limitations.

Try yoga with Adrienne on youtube

I have awful knees and good thing about doing it at home is you can skip poses which aren't good for knees other than standing there doing nothing during a class.

You need to strengthen your thigh muscles will really help with your knees I've had several knee procedures and I was told this by more than one psyhio

Battle ropes are a fantastic cardio workout, and you don’t need to move your legs at all! Really excellent for fat burning, upper body and core strength

Wallywobbles · 11/06/2022 07:57

I've downloaded an app called daily yoga. It's a bit expensive. I definitely should have gone with the original offer. But I've done it 9 days straight. So maybe a bit promising.

Get fit with rick does walking workouts, pretty much low impact areobics.
Mr Motivator has various options including chair based adaptions. His are a mix of cardio/ strength.

I also have dodgy knees - breast stroke is my fave but bad for them so I've had to focus on crawl and backstroke.

How about walking uphill on a treadmill? You want c10% incline.

The other thing that will be helpful is glute work and core work to help strengthen and take the pressure off your knees.
