Yoga and Pilates

I currently do yoga and love it. However, I find that it is good for strength and flexibility but I still want to lose some weight.

Anyone who does Pilates (or both), do you recommend it? Is it good for weight loss? I think yoga is also good for toning, would you say Pilates is?

I do both & Pilates is the one that gives me a bit of a healthy ache for a day or 2 after. It's definitely one that helps with core strength

I have done Pilates for the last 10 years, initially a bit erratic in attendance but twice weekly since I retired. It is brilliant for core strength and flexibilty. I don't think it helps with weight loss, but there are some related classes e.g. Fitness Pilates, Yogalates which might help. I know the Fitness Pilates class at the local leisure centre is quite fast paced.

Huge Pilates fan here! I've been going weekly for years and in my experience it is much better at building strength and core muscle.

I do yoga but feel it's more stretching and meditation (and I meditate separately anyway).

Pilates is incredible.

I do Pilates 5-6 days a week at the moment. It complements yoga and ballet nicely, I find. Though yoga is more a relaxing class I fit in if I have time.

I haven't found Pilates has any impact on weight loss, and I'm not trying to lose weight. It helps with general and core strength (I use weights) and keeps nicely toned. The particular exercises I do don't lend themselves to help with flexibility, so I do a full body stretch now and then.

I strength train quite seriously, run, do hiit, and do Pilates sometimes when I have time, and after illness or injury. I love it and think it is very good for building core strength and learning healthy movement patterns that carry over into other training - but no, not for weight loss - you won't burn calories or build much muscle. I've found I need serious strength training for that (heavy weights or proper bodyweight training), or cardio (I'd suggest start with fast walking if you don't do much at present, in gym kit and trainers, get out of breath and sweaty and build up from there).

Thanks all, that's really helpful. I do yoga twice a week at the minute so considering doing it once and Pilates once and then also doing some cardio such as walking/running/swimming so I can lose a bit of weight and tone. Only hoping to lose about 3 pounds so hopefully it's not too taxing and then I can just focus on toning and staying fit.

I do yoga and pilates. Pilates I would say makes my sore tighten a lot more than yoga does. I went on a pilates retreat to reformer retreats that's month and ever since my core has felt so good!

I love pilates, but it is definately not for weight loss. The biggest benefit for me is mindfulness - my instructor keeps constant flow from exercise to exercise and there is no time for your mind to wonder else where

This looks absolutely amazing! Do they do these weekends often? I'd love to try reformer Pilates but they don't have it at my local gym yet
