How to train for 1500m lake swim

Bit of a lapsed swimmer. Have trained for 400m pool swims as part of a tri before.

Thinking of a 1500m lake swim in Sept.

I currently run and lift weights.

Anyone know where I can get a training programme from? Aiming for 2 swims/week as pool sessions near me are limited and I want to keep running.

How many times should I swim in actual open water before the swim? How different is sea swimming to lake swimming?
Thinking of summer hols…

Will you have a wet suit?

You need to get in some decent open water time ahead of the event to practice your sighting and the feeling of a wetsuit (if you aren't a regular open water swimmer, I'd say you def need one in September).
Initially in the pool I'd work on increasing your distance to 1500-2000m per session, and then doing speed intervals within that to get faster

I did a one mile open water swim (London Docks - lovely!) a few years ago. I was not particularly fit beforehand. I trained in the pool 4 days a week as I recall and made sure I could comfortably do more than a mile in the pool. I was lucky enough to go on holiday where there was a big lake a couple of months before the event so I did the distance in a wetsuit. It is very different from the pool (obviously) but I also found it very different to sea swimming. That might partly have been due to the wetsuit as I have never used a wetsuit in the sea. I managed the actual event in 45 mins (breaststroke) which was not too shabby given the lack of open water training I'd been able to do. If you are competing (even just against yourself) then the more practice you can get in a lake wearing the wetsuit, the better.
