online workouts for the seriously unfit

Hi, because of an intersection of various issues including work, illness, laziness etc, I have allowed myself to become very unfit. I have never been superfit but I was always active and pretty flexible etc. I have never been this unfit/stiff/inflexible in my life. I have also put on weight. I am 58 and my BMI is 27.

I don't like running, I have a rowing machine which I intend to start using again and I plan to go to aquarobics classes again. I am also looking for some online resources, but they cannot right now be full-on workouts with lots of jumping about, I am too unfit for that. Has anyone any suggestions? Thanks.

I do a lot of online workouts from youtube. I would just put something like 20 minute beginners workout in the search and see what comes up and as you progress and find a style that works for you, you can do more specific searches. I particularly like the popsugar workous on youtube but they have a lot of content and cover all levels so you may have to sift through a lot before you find what youre looking for

Look for Lucy Wyndham Read's workouts on YouTube.

Paula b is brilliant...especially for the over 50' s!

Anyone you could buddy up with to go for walks? Don't underestimate it esp if very unfit can start slow and short will build it up very fast.
Once you have some fitness walking could introduce other exercises.
Having someone to walk with will motivate you to go on days couldn't be bothered also chatting makes it more enjoyable.
Good luck

Leslie Sanone's Walk at home routines are good for your purposes I think - on youtube

Badlifeday · 24/04/2022 18:36

sansone even

Mungojerry69 · 24/04/2022 18:38

Also jessica smith .....loads of different levels and another brilliant instructor

CeeceeBloomingdale · 24/04/2022 18:40

I agree with Leslie Sansone, I was going to recommend her too. She has videos starting at just 10 minutes long too so easy to get going.

Mr Motivator (daily dozen)
Get fit with Rick (walking workouts)
Yoga with Adriene

Thanks so much for the replies! I will be doing some walking, it is a good idea to start with that. I can actually walk a long way, I am not at the level of unfitness that a long walk is an issue. But the minute I start trying to run, jump, cycle, do a normal sort of "workout", I have to stop within minutes and I actually feel ill. I have a Fitbit and will be trying to get step counts in (although I live somewhere where it rains a lot, so motivation can be an issue!).

I am a bit antisocial, as in I would probably be less likely to go for a walk if I "had" to go with someone and talk to them! My DH is extremely fit from his work, but is not a walker or runner.

I will have a look at the YouTube and other videos mentioned, thanks! I am trying to avoid ones where instructions to jump about are issued by a twenty-something size 6 woman, just makes me feel old!

I was also going to recommend Get Fit with Rick's walking workouts on YouTube. They are low impact and most are around 10-15 minutes.

Mungojerry69 · 24/04/2022 18:51

I meant pahla b not paula

FlowerArranger · 24/04/2022 19:10

If you can wear wrist and ankle weights while you're walking you'll increase the benefits tremendously 😀

Nydj · 24/04/2022 19:17

Came on to recommend Leslie Sansone as well.

Our Parks have a programme called couch to fitness on their website and on YouTube. It's a 9 week programme, 3 x 30 kin workouts a week that build from easier to harder over the weeks. They show modifications for every exercise so if you can't do the full movement you can do a reduced version of it. And it's free.

theDudesmummy · 24/04/2022 19:33

I will look into all the suggestions!
