One hip much less mobile and more inflexible - anyone had this?

I developed pain in my right hip when I was running. So I’m trying to do squats and stretch my hamstrings a bit, and some yoga too. I’ve realised though it’s just much stiffer, sorry not sure that’s the right word - but say if I’m standing up I can raise my left leg and bend it in almost to my chest, but my right side only comes up 90 degrees (if you can picture this?!). So everything in yoga is much harder on one side and hurts a bit. Will doing the squats etc help this? Is this normal? Has anyone discovered this kind of imbalance and what did you do?

Hmm with me it's arthritis in my hip. Really noticeable during Pilates that I can do so much more on the other side!

TheGeoffLinton · 19/04/2022 22:20

Do you just have the arthritis in your hip Spring or is it other areas? Also how old are you, if you don’t mind me asking?

I have a 'squeaky' hip and see a physio for it.
long story short - I had an injury and due to reducing movement for a while the muscles/tendons shortened.

exercises, stretches and core strength really helped.

boatyardblues · 24/04/2022 08:40

Yep, I’ve got one tighter hip. I’m working with a personal trainer and my programme includes exercises to increase mobility in my tighter hip and even me out. It’s not a quick fix but things are improving.

Physio best person to help you.

SmiledWtherisingsun · 14/05/2022 06:58

I have a really tight hip just now. Non idea why.

Cegbee · 14/05/2022 08:30

I had the same issue caused by running, turns out I have a labral tear- Google it and see if the symptoms fit!

Worldgonecrazy · 14/05/2022 08:31

I have a tight psoas on my left side and that hip has very little flexibility compared to the other. Exercise hadn’t helped much. I just live with it.

SoManyTshirts · 14/05/2022 08:38

With me the pain started on long hikes at about 57. It was osteoarthritis and ultimately (63) I had a hip replacement. It was up and down for a long time. Exercise and swimming kept me going as long as possible and helped my recovery. Seen 3 physios, ranged from useless to actively detrimental.

My other joints click like mad and I know from X-ray have slight arthritis, but don’t cause me any problems.

Look up Tom Morrison on YouTube. He's got some great videos about creating stability and balance in your body.

CMOTDibbler · 15/05/2022 20:01

I've always had one hip much tighter and less flexible than the other. My physio (for other things) says I need to do the prescribed stretches more

Yes me.

Yoga is an excellent approach as most exercises are one side then the other so you can spend longer on the stretch etc on the bad side.

Delatron · 16/05/2022 19:44

My left hip is so much tighter and doesn’t open at all really. After seeing lots of people I’ve come to the conclusion it’s mainly down to anatomy. It’s my job to stretch all day long so I can’t do any more stretching/ hip opening. It has very little affect so I live with it. I make sure my muscles around it are really string so lots of hip flexor and glute work.

ExMachinaDeus · 16/05/2022 23:03

We're all a bit asymmetrical. Do you sleep on that side? I find that sometimes causes tightness in the back of my right side - I sleep on my right side, and although that is my stronger & more flexible side, I think sleeping all night on one side tightens it up.

mellongoose · 17/05/2022 06:33

My right hip is tighter and hurts on long runs. Mine is postural; since being a child I have always sat on the floor with both knees pointing right. I also have an old ankle injury on the right which is pulling on the hip.

I need to support the ankle/foot and I need to stretch my glutes/hip.

GOODCAT · 17/05/2022 09:16

I have right hip pain. It was made a lot worse with running. I had a hip and knee x ray which showed nothing. The physio said it was something that I can't remember the name of and said to swim and use a standing bike. Swimming helps, but I am still struggling with the idea of cycling because of the knee pain.

I would go to your GP for this.

TheGeoffLinton · 29/05/2022 23:59

Sorry to @ you @cegbee but I’ve just come back to the thread. How did you discover it was a labral tear?

Cegbee · 30/05/2022 00:04

@TheGeoffLinton I actually paid for a private MRI in the end because my GP said they weren't allowed to send me for one without going through orthopaedics. Then when I finally got the referral through I already had the scan results.

TheGeoffLinton · 30/05/2022 00:12

Thank you!

R0tational · 30/05/2022 00:17

I had sports massage recently and it helped generally with thr stiffness/pain. Perhaps try that as thr physio will be able to feel if there is simply tightness on one side

Thighdentitycrisis · 30/05/2022 00:26

I have piriformis on the right side - meant to do hip abduction exercises lying on the floor, I sit with my right leg crossed over left and tucked under again iyswim - very twisted and I think it’s part of the problem

mumieone · 30/05/2022 00:39

Yes I had an imobility issue. My hips ached..shooting psins...wentb to physio appointments (sorry to say but complete waste of time/NHS funding as they gave me a couple of printouts to exercise).

Ended up finding my own exercises on YouTube I couldn't sit cross legged at all.

Every night in bed I lay on my back and forced myself to cross my legs as in a sitting position to stretch those stiff muscles and in the day walked several hours a day. It worked. Flexibility all back

Put on lots of weight and pain is back in the hips...started walking again today. The weight loss and exercise made massive improvements

Loads of helpful replies thank you. It’s maybe quite common then!
