Incontinence when running

Does anyone have any recommendations of what to use? Blush. I have been wearing tenna lady pads but they are so bulky and look like I’m wearing a nappy under my running trousers!

I’m training for a 10k and have really bad stress incontinence

Try period knickers. They do them for bladder weakness too. I love my Modibodi. No smells or leaks and pop in normal wash after use. A game changer. Dd wears them for periods too.

Annoyedandirritated · 01/04/2022 13:00

Amazing thank you I hadn’t considered period pants! I have just ordered some from Amazon

Have you considered wearing a mooncup?

Never fails me.

Fitterbyfifty · 02/04/2022 17:33

How would that work for incontinence? Confused

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 02/04/2022 17:40

Would definitely recommend period pants. I use them for incontinence as don't have periods and they have been life changing, no more bulky pads and so much better for the environment.

A tampon can help, so it’s the same logic. And I don’t mean to absorb, it’s more about positioning and propping things into the right place.
FrangipaniBlue · 02/04/2022 17:47

FFS please don't follow the awful advice and use a tampon when you aren't on your period!!!

Wtf Hmm

Cupcakegirl13 · 02/04/2022 17:52

Those recommending tampons and moon cups know it’s coming out of a different hole right ?!🤨

angelsandinsects · 02/04/2022 17:56

Do you have incontinence at other times, when jumping for example? I had some physio on my pelvic floor area for DC2 and discovered that I have a little shelf/pocket where a bit of wee gets trapped and then gets dislodged if I do something strenuous like coughing, jumping, running. To reduce the chance of it happening, when I go to the loo before doing something like that, I do a wee wait a few seconds, then tilt at an angle and a bit more dribbles out. I then have a good shake and a bit more tends to come out! That tends to sort me out.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 02/04/2022 17:59

I have this too and I don’t know how to solve it. Early 40s. Only started becoming a problem last couple of years although I gave birth to twins in early 30s.

WTF is this mooncup and tampon advice??

LtGreggs · 02/04/2022 18:00

How much is it? Dribbles or a lot?

If you wear black leggings you could just do nothing - especially if you are running places where there are not loads of people. No one will notice if they are the other side of the park, or you pass the occasional dog walker in the woods. I am the voice of unfortunate experience Blush

This is a bit awkward if you’re in an exercise class or at the gym!
cavalatete · 02/04/2022 18:02

Worth visiting a woman's health/pelvic floor physio. Can help you actually stop wetting yourself rather than just soaking it up. It's worth doing what you can to get it sorted (at least as much as possible) because it will only get worse as you age.

Iamsodonewith2020 · 02/04/2022 18:04

Following as I suffer with this a lot. I have tried period pants but I am losing more urine than they seem to hold. Have given up running as so bad

TooManyPJs · 02/04/2022 18:08

Please go to your GP and ask for a referral to urogynae. There are loads of things that can be done about stress incontinence, you don't have to put up with it. Waiting for my physio appt to come through now.

GalaPie · 02/04/2022 18:09

You could also incorporate some Pilates sessions into your training, the principles can vastly improve ab and pelvic floor strength as well as general conditioning.

Smartiepants79 · 02/04/2022 18:11

This is one of the many reasons I don’t go running!!

Muscari11 · 02/04/2022 18:32

I have the same problem & have been wearing Cheeky period pants. It seems to happen as soon as I start running anything further than about 3k, even if I go to the loo immediately before I leave. @angelsandinsects post made a lot of sense to me because often when I think I’ve finished a wee & stand up, I have a little ‘10% extra free’ experience. I will ask for a referral next time I speak to the GP. I also bought a gimmicky pelvic floor trainer a while ago that has been sat in my bedside drawer so I’ll dig that out and see if it makes a difference & update.

MrsPaperclip · 02/04/2022 20:00

Watching with interest- I've just been referred to a women's physio but the waiting list seems extreme.

The mooncup/ tampon thing makes sense - not for absorption, obviously, but for holding things in place. Apparently there are specific devices for this. See eg www.abc.net.au/news/health/2017-03-08/should-you-avoid-running-with-a-weak-pelvic-floor/8335374 (scroll down to below the ad, or search for the word "pessary" on the page).

xsquared · 02/04/2022 22:30

I know what a mooncup is for thank you. @Cupcakegirl13 @Fitterbyfifty

It's not to catch the leaks but for some reason, whenever I wear a mooncup, I never leak when I run.

xsquared · 02/04/2022 22:32

And yes I do mean I don't leak urine when I wear a mooncup. I sometimes do if I run too fast and downhill without one. In fact it was on here that I read it!

Frazzled2207 · 02/04/2022 22:35

Tampon def works this end- as pp said it’s about the positioning and holding things up

Not necc recommended though depending on your cycle

You’re not the only one OP I struggle with this a lot since having kids.

cavalatete · 03/04/2022 06:27

www.gussetgrippers.co.uk/experience

There are some exercises here on this website to tide you over while on a waiting list. Elaine Miller used to be a mumsnetter (maybe still is?) called gussiegrips or something similar. She's also had a comedy show at the Edinburgh Fringe about this topic. Probably on YouTube. She's very funny and knows her business.

I'd say that if there are long waiting lists then it's an idea to get on them and then follow online exercises, rather then do online and then if don't work go on the waiting list. They are quite specific and as we often aren't actually using the muscles correctly/efficiently in the first place, we can think we're doing the exercises correctly, but actually aren't! Better to try than not, but going to the specialist physio is invaluable.

Worth noting that women in France get specialist pelvic floor physiotherapy after giving birth. Every woman. Then once their pelvic floor is working properly they get abdominal physiotherapy. We have to wet ourselves and then go on a waiting list. One of those systems seems better than the other.

Littlefidget2 · 03/04/2022 06:34

Yes, referral to pelvic floor physio and using contam/ contiform. Fabulous stuff! I order them from the stressnomore website, and they have kept me running. I would have stopped otherwise due to leaking. They were recommended by the pelvic floor physio I saw.
