I've..
Registered, got batcode
Know where and when

But how does it work on the day? Do we register when we get there Is? Is there a maximum time? (Will people laugh at the overweight middle aged woman trying her best?)
Will running/walking be ok?

Congratulations!

First of all I can guarantee no-one one will laugh at you.!

The first time you go , aim to get there for the ‘first timers’ briefing which is normally at 8.45. That will tell you about the course and finish. You don’t need to do any registration prior to running, just join this briefing

At the start, try to be at the back of the field as all the super speedy gazelles go at the front. Take your time and start off slowly. There is no maximum time (We often have finishers of an hour or longer) and there will always be a tail walker at the back so no one gets left behind or is last.

Once you cross the finish line you’ll get given a numbered token which you hand in to scan along with your barcode. ( you won’t need your barcode until after running so can keep it safe)

Freddofan · 17/03/2022 08:34

Oh and run walking is absolutely fine .. you’ll see lots of people taking a walk break !

Mamadothehump · 17/03/2022 08:37

I was so nervous before my first one in the summer but no reason to be at all! No one will laugh at you, I promise! So many abilities there each week.
Like PP said, no need to register when you get there - just rock up. You'll only need your barcode at the end which is scanned along with your token which is handed to you when you go through the finishing funnel. Enjoy!!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 17/03/2022 08:39

Great thanks. My 10yo DD is coming with me... shes trying to find an activity she will enjoy.

Walk run is fine, but just as you wouldn't slam your brakes on in the middle lane of the motorway, don't suddenly slow without being aware of who is behind you and how fast they are going, and you're better off walking to one side of the path than in the middle so that others can overtake. Might sound obvious, but Parkrun can be busy and will have a range of abilities. A bit of awareness goes a long way towards avoiding collisions.

I used tobe a competitive cross country/road runner, so used to mass running situations fortunately .

I'm looking forward to it.

If your daughter is taking part, then make sure she has her own barcode too. She’ll then get a time and a position to beat next time. If you are run walking it might be an idea to do set intervals using your watch (a minute or two at a time depending on fitness) or counting / singing a song etc as from what I’ve seen some of the kids can go haring off … then realise 5k is further than than they thought !

Welcome!!

You don't need to do anything before or at the start of the event, except turn up with your barcode and listen to the briefing. But if you do have any questions, ask someone in a hi-viz jacket - they're the volunteers and should be able to help.

In short, what you do is listen to briefing, go to the start, run. When you approach the finish, there will be a couple of volunteers with stopwatches, then a funnel and at the end of the funnel is another volunteer who will give you a finish token.

The finish token is not a souvenir! Do not take it away with you!!

Also make sure you stay in the same order in the funeral as the order you entered it, and don't duck out of the side of it. This is because the next but marries up the click of the stopwatch when you passed the line, the finish token (which gives your place) and you. Get the finish token out of step with the actual number of finishers and the results processor will curse you and all your descendants!

Take your finish token and get out your barcode and go to a barcode scanner (volunteer waving a smartphone about). They will scan your barcode, then your finish token, and then will either take your token or tell you where to drop it.

Then when everyone is finished, the stopwatch results and the scanning info get uploaded and married up and you get a text/email with your time.

If you don't want a tine, you can either go through the funnel, take your token and just drop it unscanned at the collection point. Or not enter the funnel at all (so timekeepers don't click you)

Yes it's fine to walk - my favourite volunteer position is tailwalker. All the best people are at the back.

They may ask people to line up at the start in order if expected finish time (it eases congestion at big events). If you're not sure, then just start towards the back at your first one and see how you get on. It's a run not a race!

(PS: sorry - too wordy - it's really very straightforward on the day!)

megletthesecond · 17/03/2022 08:58

Slow walking and chatting is also fine.
Run walking is ideal.

Don't get out of order in the finishing funnel as your time should match up with your finishing token. They'll blip you as you finish and you'll be handed a token at the end of the funnel. Then go to the Scanners who will zap your personal barcode and your finishing token.

And your daughter will have to run with you as she's under 11.

grafittiartist · 17/03/2022 13:08

Love love love parkrun!
Hope that you enjoy it Smile

Yes I'm not sure who will be holding the other up!

Thanks all. DD is looking forward to trying it to.

Enjoy, you will get a Personal best the first time as well which is great. Then you can track your progress as you get stronger and fitter. Also you could volunteer once every few weeks to help. Kids can buy a t-shirt after 10 runs which is a nice incentive. Adults have to wait till 25 I think.

emmathedilemma · 17/03/2022 13:45

@horseymum that's correct re. t-shirts.

Lastqueenofscotland · 17/03/2022 17:10

You need to register in terms of getting a barcode (online, free, can be on your phone)
Just turn up about ten minutes before there is usually a first timers briefing.

Be warned it’s ridiculously addictive

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 19/03/2022 09:54

UPDATE: we did it! Under 45mins which was my initial target.

Fantastic! Well done!

Lady0racle · 19/03/2022 16:44

That’s brilliant @Aroundtheworldin80moves. Well done!

Arucanafeather · 19/03/2022 17:01

That brilliant well done!

MaudieandMe · 19/03/2022 17:08

Well done. Great time too!

I'm in West Cork, Ireland and we often get holidaymakers joining our Parkrun as it's a beautiful scenic but tricky run through woods along the coastline.

We had an English couple today who arrived about ten to nine and were worried they'd got the wrong place as there wasn't anyone there as we don't start till 9.30am and we average about 25 runners during the quiet season. Smile

Do most Parkrun's start at 9am in the UK?

Shopgirl1 · 20/03/2022 08:24

@MaudieandMe which is your local parkrun? I love doing parkrun when away. Is it Bere Island? I’m hoping to do that in the summer, I’ve heard it’s stunning.

Freddofan · 20/03/2022 08:47

@MaudieandMe yes it’s 9.00 am as a standard start time here

MaudieandMe · 20/03/2022 09:32

@Shopgirl1

No, I’m talking about Castlehaven, although Bere Island is a nice one too.

Shopgirl1 · 20/03/2022 10:10

Oh that looks lovely. Will add it to the list!

emmathedilemma · 20/03/2022 18:08
@MaudieandMe yes it’s 9.00 am as a standard start time here
No it’s not! 9am in England and Wales, 9:30 in Scotland and Northern Ireland.
