Hiking alone

Hopefully this is the best place for this.

Hiking alone... would you? DH is not keen on me going alone, I'm not overly confident about the idea (anxiety as a lone female in remote places) however I am also 100% I'd rather not do it with DH, baby and toddler in tow. I would probably take the dog for company.

If you hike as a family. Tips would also be helpful.

I do and also do some technical fell runs alone.
I have an all singing garmin that can tell if I’ve had a fall and contact someone.
Good map reading skills, charged phone, give someone a rough idea of your route and a rough ETA.

Far more likely to encounter a wrongun in a city

@LaChanticleer

I remember my first go at the Fairfield horseshoe. It’s a big fell but not difficult. It was a lovely sunny day so I’d sacked off work (I can sit at my desk when it rains) and thought I’d get away from it all.

Did I heck! It was like the M1 going up to Fairfield! Loads of people. So much so that I adjusted my plans and found a different way down that was less crowded.

Fairfield horse shoe is so busy and long… and dare I say it a bit boring after a while!

It’s not one If choose to go up for the reason you’ve given but my 12yr old was desperate to go up there recently as you can see it from our kitchen window and it has lots more snow on it than the others around it… so we set off from Grasmere up stone Arthur to the top and then down past Alcock Tarn. Much more pleasant and a lot lot quieter than the ridge line.

I've been going out on my own into my local wilderness a lot recently but it's not really very wild or dangerous (New Forest) so I just have decent shoes, some water and my phone. Everyone I've met, even the lone men in the middle of nowhere, have been lovely and friendly, always have a smile and a kind word. I love it and it's my new favourite thing to do!
