Weight loss is mostly diet but to start with the key thing is to find something that you enjoy.

Something you do regularly and for a few months is the best thing to lose weight.

There's no point me saying that open water swimming is the best option if you hate the water and live 2 hrs from somewhere suitable!

You need to try loads of different things until you get something that you want to keep doing.

Home workouts - HIIT, aerobics, dance workouts, weight workouts, ballet - there's a zillion options on YouTube
Walking
Running
Swimming
Zumba
Gym classes
Yoga
Martial arts
Dancing - Latin, swing, jive, Street
Etc etc etc

Have fun exploring!!

As PP said, losing weight is 95% what you eat and 5% exercise. You should exercise to get fit and strong but what you eat is what will make you lose weight.
Have you looked at the Blast Plan? Helped me shift a few kilos when I wanted to and get fitter and stronger.

To get going and get motivation you do something (whatever you don't hate the most) and then keep doing it.

That will sound glib but that's it, there is no more.

The other posters are right though, you can't outrun the kitchen.

The running (or whatever) can make you feel good, which in turn is good for your physical and mental health, which helps you tackle the rest.

Exercise is really good for you. But unless you're doing a huge amount of it every day, that won't help you to lose weight.

It's all about your diet.

What are you eating/drinking in a typical week?

fellrunner85 · 19/02/2022 23:49

Erm, you can outrun the kitchen, but it takes a LOT of running - which obviously you can't jump straight into.

OP, in terms of exercise, it's about finding a routine that you enjoy and that you'll stick with. Don't expect to enjoy it from the start though, as all good exercise is HARD at first. I hated running for about six months , and really struggled to even get through c25k - but then somehow it clicked and now I'm pretty much addicted.

C25k, plus 10k steps a day, plus no alcohol or takeaways and an all round healthy diet would have a big impact fairly quickly.

Good luck - I know it's really hard when you're starting out.

I also facing this type of experience during my starting stage. I simply doing my running workouts step by step.

In my starting stage I never lose my hope and another thing , I never expected results in a very short time. So don't lose your hope , be slow and steady to win the race.

As others have already said, weight lost is mostly diet. Calculate your TDEE (there are online calculators that will do this for you) and put yourself in roughly 500 calorie deficit daily to lose around 2 pounds a week, although you will probably lose more than that at the start.

Consistency is key. Start by walking, get your 10000’steps in. C25k is a great starting point if you fancy running. Try a variety of things and see what you like. As you lose weight you will enjoy exercise more and be more motivated to keep going.

Good luck, you absolutely can do it but you must be consistent and patient.

Can you hire a PT? Motivation and willpower are my downfall so a PT gives me much needed accountability.

They can help you with nutrition as well as tailoring workouts for your requirements. I get set 4 workouts to do over a week and they only change after 3 months, you want consistency for results not to change exercises all the time.

It is about finding what you enjoy as consistency is key eg if you're joining a gym make it one that's easy to get to regularly. Mine is part of the school run.

Just want to add that a 500 calories daily deficit could be very unsustainable. With the weight you are I wouldn't drop below 1600-1800 calories a day.

I have lost a stone basically through exercise. Well, i say exercise, i mean walking. Probably around 8-10 hours a week. 1 hour each weekday and then 2-3 hours at the weekend. I've got a dog though which means it has to be done. No other form of exercise has ever worked (usually because I couldn't keep it up.)

astridpeth · 23/02/2022 17:44

This was me last March. 6 stone overweight and a size 18/20.
I started with my diet. IF 16/8 and LCHF then I added in walking, I walked and walked and walked. When my stamina was better I added in hula hooping. Since Christmas I have added in weights and skipping. I am down 5 and 1/2 stone and am now a size 10. You can do this. Break it down into manageable sized chunks. Don't overdo things to begin with because you most likely won't keep it up. Slow and steady wins the race. But absolutely start in the kitchen. X
