Underwear for running (cough)

I have started running, and am really enjoying it except for worry over my pelvic floor. I sometimes wear a sanitary pad in case, or just stop and walk when I feel like I might be 'at risk'. Today though, I realised at the end of a run that I was properly wet - not just a little leak Blush. I really don't want to stop, im wearing darker leggings in case but are incontinence pants worthwhile? Have any runners tried them? If so, what brands are good?

You need to work on your pelvic floor! Don’t ignore it otherwise you could end up with really bad issues such as back pain, knee injuries etc.

So Pilates type core exercises are a great start.

minipie · 15/01/2022 21:06

My understanding is that running with a weak pelvic floor can make it worse and harder to resolve. I would be very cautious about running if you are having leaks, sorry!

Low impact cardio (spinning, swimming, cycling, fast walking) is much better if you have a weak pelvic floor, while you build up pelvic floor strength.

JeanGabin · 15/01/2022 21:10

Oh no! I'm doing core exercises and using the Squeezy app already, maybe time for a visit to the GP. Tbf today's the first time it's really happened, and was at park run so pushing myself more than if I was running alone.

I always wear a pad for any exercise. Better safe than sorry.

Isonthecase · 15/01/2022 21:13

I think Sophie power did something on this, she has prolapse and runs ultras. I think she recommended some special shorts or something?

ohthejoysoftoddler · 15/01/2022 21:13

Modi Bodi who do period pants also do some you can use for if you leak a little.

I have the period ones and they are fab. I occasionally wear them for high impact exercise, as after two kids i sometimes have problems Grin

Definitely a visit to GP. I run and religiously do my pelvic floor exercises as I've wet myself a couple of times when running really hard.

ouch321 · 15/01/2022 21:18

You sure it's not sweat? High intensity cardio makes me sweat all over inc on the bottom half.
I've no kids though if that makes a difference

longcoffeebreak · 15/01/2022 21:20

I run everyday pretty much and couldn't do it at all without this:

SaltedCaramelHC · 15/01/2022 21:21

there is a company that makes running leggings that are supposed to be extra supportive for the pelvic area and reduce the problem; they're in Ireland somewhere, forgotten the name right now but it might come to me. You can probably google it though.

SaltedCaramelHC · 15/01/2022 21:22

ah, it's EVB leggings

JeanGabin · 15/01/2022 21:53

Ouch - pretty sure it wasn't sweat unfortunately! Thanks for lots of suggestions - I'll see if I can find what Sophie power said and look into modi bodi, that sounds just what I was looking for.
Soup- good to know it's not just me! I was trying to keep up with DS2!
I'd heard of those coffee break - they sound great for some people but I think might not work for me as I have prolapse.
Salted caramel, will definitely look into those leggings.
Tbh I've been thinking about asking for a gynae referral, but kept putting it off as I was overweight and unfit. Maybe nows the time.

With a prolapse, I would look to strengthen your core, not just your pelvic floor. Have a look at basic Pilates exercises - more basic things like this you need

JeanGabin · 15/01/2022 22:17

Just ordered the modi bodi thejoys - thanks for the rec

I have a similar problem and use modibody period pants + black leggings, always. But I’m old and post menopausal, do what you can to fix it while you are young and elastic!

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 15/01/2022 22:27

@JeanGabin well worth looking at this site

supportedmums.com/

I go to Amanda's Pilates classes and she's evangelical about improving pelvic floors.

JeanGabin · 16/01/2022 07:49

Thanks twinkletoes - that site looks great, loads to read through.
Dark leggings, a pad and modi body for now (as well as exercises). Maybe need to forgo / delay my morning coffee on run days too
