Parkrun with 2yo?

Monsoon92 · 10/01/2022 18:15

So I'm not new to running but I've never done a parkrun before and think it might be a good way to shake up my workouts. Would I be able to bring my 2yo in a pram? I don't know how great they are for running with or if I'd be allowed. Or should I wait until she's a bit older and try and find a kids parkrun (if these things even exist?)

Does anyone else do this and find it works well? I want her to see exercise as something normal and fun so she's hopefully more inclined to do something active when she's older!

Someone does our local one with a double running buggy-kids are about 2&3 so he gets a very good workout!
Why don’t you walk it with the buggy first to see how it feels then look out for a cheap running buggy on marketplace or something if you want.
Kids park runs are on Sundays at 9am. 2km

Fine at most but check out the course page on the website as some aren't suitable (steps, too narrow, too steep, too muddy/slippery). The only one that was a definite no that I've done was at the time the 8th hilliest in the UK and has a muddy, tree rooty steep "dip of doom" which would be very difficult/impossible with a buggy.

If you're planning to run regularly I'd get a running buggy as they're much less bumpy and easier to run with as well but you might get away on a smooth tarmac course!

I’ve run it with a buggy, a proper running buggy tho. A standard one will wreck your back.

Kids park run starts at 4yo

We do it with DTs who are 20 months with a running buggy. Just check the course is suitable for a buggy.

Theregoesmyhomebirth · 10/01/2022 18:43

As PP said, yes but with a running buggy (fixed front wheel/handbrake etc). DH has been running with DD in a running buggy since she was about 18 months and she loves it. She gets very upset if he tries to sneak out for a run without her now. There's quite a few at our Parkrun including one who often reads a book on the way round Grin

Don't be that dick who runs with an inappropriate buggy though (or child under 6 months as seen at our local Parkrun Angry)

Most parkruns have people running or walking with buggies. Some of earliest buggy babies now run the course themselves which is so lovely to see! Just check the course description online as some landowners don’t permit them and other courses such as the trail ones aren’t suitable for buggies.

Most of the parkruns I have been to allow them. However, they may ask buggies to start at the back so they don't cause a bottleneck - can be hard for runners to overtake them, particularly if paths are narrow. Basically, the specific rules vary will by parkrun so it's worth confirming. Also there's often a pre-run briefing for new runners about 15 minutes before the start, so it's worth getting there early your first time to get the lowdown.

gogohm · 11/01/2022 20:34

Lots of buggies! They ask you to start at the back

randomsabreuse · 11/01/2022 22:56

The rules are now to start as appropriate for your expected finish time rather than necessarily at the back ...

Until you are in the swing of it, it's probably better to start behind the main pack, simply so you have more space. There's a knack to wielding one in a group of runners, and if you haven't done it before it's not a terribky good idea to debut in a crowd, Once you have a few parkruns under your belt, then you'll be able to work out best place for you

ffscovid · 11/01/2022 23:37

Yes but make sure that it's a proper running buggy with a wrist loop, handbrake and fixed front wheel. Don't give DC snacks (choking hazard trying to eat whilst fast moving over bumpy ground and real choking is silent so you'd possibly be unaware).

Monsoon92 · 11/01/2022 23:42

Thanks all, I'd be better off starting at the back with the speed I go anyway Grin I'll have to wait a bit to be able to afford a new pram now - last few months of maternity leave! She'll be happier with doing it in the summer anyway I reckon, so I'll look into it again then. Thanks all! Smile

Look on your local Facebook selling pages for a running buggy, they're often used as second or even third prams so often come up for sale in good condition.
