Calling Peloton users for tips and motivation

I can't find any threads on Peloton that aren't about weighing up pros and cons or referrals (please don't spam this thread with referrals!)

I've just ordered mine (Bike+) and am awaiting a date for delivery. In the meantime they've given me complimentary access to the £12.99 version, or that's what it appears..

I have a few questions:
How do you choose your classes? There are SO many and I feel overwhelmed even choosing a yoga for tonight!
On the full version can you see a timetable of live classes? Is there a way to preview this before my all access membership kicks in?
Any tips on carving out time from family life? When do you do it and how do you keep accountable.

I'm excited for it to arrive. Pre-baby I went to CrossFit 5 times a week but we now live rurally with no local gyms/box so Peloton it is. On the upside we have a great spot for it in front of a view of fields and mountains!

Hi!

I've had mine since July 2020, I'm 80 weeks in and a high frequency user (top 10% according to the stats you get each year). To answer your questions:

How do you choose your classes? There are SO many and I feel overwhelmed even choosing a yoga for tonight!

The app is a bit less intuitive than the bike interface (when it arrives) so don't worry if it all looks like a massive library and you don't know where to start just now.

Programs is a good place to start. I started with Mastering the Basics -a program that gets you used to cycling, the different instructors and their styles. It's 6 weeks. There's a new short version "You can ride" that's just 3 weeks. Once I did that I got an idea of what I liked from that, I started picking rides from "Collections" which is basically an A-Z of music artist themed rides. It was a bit random and I wanted more structure, so I started looking at all the peloton groups on facebook. I found one for mums in my profession and they had a timetable and various challenges and that gave me more structure. Once I'd hit ride 100, I did Discover Your Powerzones. This is a program for improving your cycling output. You do a test on the bike and then the graphics update with your own personalised power bar and you use this to train. I've kind of got addicted to this and been doing various Powerzone Challenges ever since.

For strength I started with "Total Strength" and "Total Strength 2", 2 programs by one of the instructors. There is also a facebook group called Hardcore on the Floor which posts daily "stacks" (a clutch of 10 and 20 minute classes to put together each day) on a monthly calendar.

The instructors are also active on social media and post their own stacks, calendars and recommendations.

There are programs dedicated to core, boxing, various forms of spinning/cycling, yoga...everything really...even sleep meditation.

I would suggest getting started with one of the riding basics programs and just have a browse to find other programs over time. Find a group that suits you on fb. UK Ladies Peloton is good but huge now.

On the full version can you see a timetable of live classes? Is there a way to preview this before my all access membership kicks in?

Yes, look at the schedule tab in the app. But honestly, live classes become a really small part of it for most people. People usually do them on their birthday or a special number (100th ride etc) for a shout out rather than day in day out.

Any tips on carving out time from family life? When do you do it and how do you keep accountable.

I have 3 kids -aged 10, 7 and 3. Honestly -I just have to get up early. I keep accountable by engaging in various challenges and programs so that I always have a goal or a deadline to complete. Every month you can sign up for 3 challenges on the bike based on active days, miles cycled, number of strength and you can get gold, silver and bronze. I make gold my minimum in all three as my regular accountability. But I usually have some additional accountability through a couple of challenges through soc med.

Hope that helps.

@Psychonabike Thanks that helps so much! I'm on mat leave with number 3 right now. She is 3 weeks old and I have an almost 2 yo and a 13yo. My plan is to exercise during the day when 2yo is at nursery and newborn naps for now then when I go back I guess I will have to get up at dawn or carve out time on work from home days. I work in consulting so long hours but I tend to be able to set my own schedule and only go into the office twice a week when not traveling. Intrigued there is a group for your profession, is your username a clue? I'm going to go hunting for groups to get excited...this is the biggest purchase I've made in a while so I'm trying to enjoy the anticipation Grin

Good to know about programmes and challenges...but what on earth is a stack?

@WhyYesYABU You're welcome! There are groups for loads of jobs and interests -pelo teachers, lawyers...some based on music taste, sports, love of a particular instructor. Main thing is to find something for you, community challenges are so motivating. I think that the people most likely to give up on it are those who don't engage with the community aspect at all.

Stacks: there are loads of 10, 20 minute classes etc. A stack is when you put together your own timetable for the day by stacking classes so they run one after the other. Its easy. You see a stack option when you open a class as an alternative to starting it immediately. I might stack a 10 min core, 30 cycle, 10 min arms with light weights, 5 min stretch and run through them all as my morning routine. Or just a warm up, ride, cooldown and stretch. The hardcore on the floor fb page recommends strength stacks for each day with a different body area focus.

The last thing I do each night is to create the next morning's stack.

But there is no need to stack at all. You can just pick and choose as you go.

Psychonabike · 08/01/2022 18:39

@WhyYesYABU btw...stacks are really useful when you are relying on little ones napping e.g if you stacked a bunch of 10 min rides, instead of one 30/45 min ride, you'd have more likelihood of finishing a complete ride, being able to stop and start etc incase the nap doesn't go to plan!

WhyYesYABU · 08/01/2022 19:39

Thank you that's really helped. I saw stacks mentioned on a Facebook group but didn't want to ask Blush eek I hope delivery isn't too slow. Finally we have found a use for the formal dining room we never use!

@WhyYesYABU You are going to love it.

We got our bike last March having done no exercise since school (we are both 40). I choose classes based on music - I like 80s and older so use the music filter. I also took the crush your core, boxing basics and beginner programs and that helped me narrow down instructors that I liked.

WhyYesYABU · 09/01/2022 19:55

Thanks @Lizzim18 I like the idea of filtering by music...are you enjoying it? Have you managed to stick to it?

@WhyYesYABU I am currently on a 44 week streak :) I still have a love/hate relationship with exercise but use our bike pretty much every day. I think I’ve missed a week or so due to a holiday. I find the variety of classes to be really good, I do a mix of strength, cycling and the odd cardio sessions.
