Basic exercise questions

I have a couple of questions.

  1. I’ve restarted C25K. What do people wear when it’s freezing outside? I can’t face the 5 min walk warm up in just leggings, t-shirt and a sweatshirt.

  1. Can I alternate running with an indoor YouTube workout? Can anyone recommend a good one?

Thanks

Body warmer on top!

Jillian Michaels is quite good, about 20 min workout, you'll find in YouTube.

Well done. When really cold, I've worn a body warmer, or a tight workout vest underneath a LS workout top then sweatshirt. Gloves are good too (I've got Asics running gloves, rather than wooly ones). I also wear an ear warmer, but that's because my ears get REALLY painful in cold weather.

Yes to alternating with an indoor workout. Try Fitness Blender perhaps?

I have a Peloton app subscription (not the actual bike - although we've got a spin bike at home that I use with the app on my ipad), and use it for running workouts, yoga, strength etc. It's £12.99 a month, and I think the content is fantastic. We also have an Apple Fitness subscription (part of our household Apple subscription), but I've not found it as good as Peloton.

I have 3 levels of leggings depending on the weather - cropped / capri (above about 12-13 degrees), long "normal" thickness (about 5-13 degrees), and thermal long leggings for colder weather.
Same with t-shirts - short sleeves, long sleeved t-shirt and then base layer (usually with a tshirt over the top as they're rather fitted!). If it's really really cold I'd wear a long sleeved top over a base layer, or my waterproof on top.
It's not uncommon for me to wear gloves with a tshirt as I get reynauds so need to keep my hands warm and a buff or headband round your ears, and one round your neck if it's cold. I can't run in a hat, I tried it once when i was -5 and I was overheating within a mile!

Body warmer on top or I use two tops, one running t-shirt and a long sleeved one on top.

Yes, of course you can use another workout on alternate days. I vary going between Pop Sugar ones, hip hop tabata one is a favourite or Body Project cardio ones.

I find if I wear a thin long sleeved t shirt under a light wind proof jacket and gloves, that keeps me warm enough.

Depends on the wind, to be honest, I can handle < freezing if wind not severe.

sleeves, double gloves, hat or headband, face buff, 2 tops all long-sleeve, lycra full leg bottom (maybe double layers on bottom). Probably only 1 pr socks. Make first 5 minutes out of wind or with wind behind you.

I use similar layering.
When I'm warmed up, it tends to be most comfortable having a light layer all over rather than thicker hot patches.

It's worth warming up at home first, or doing a short warm up loop near home/ car where spare layers can be deposited.

I find if I'm slightly cold for the warm up it's just right gor the run.

I wear long leggins (just normal ones, nothing thermal), running shirt, running fleece with full length zip.

but yea, it's like eating kimchi - it takes courage to take the first bite but then it's (usually) pleasant.Grin

If you're alternating workouts with I'd do a non-impact work out without jumping as you need recovery from impact. Fine to do something like yoga every day but would make sure you have one day with neither strength nor running workouts.

I did an interval run in yesterday's lovely cold rain. I have a lightweight "sport" running jacket and wore it for the warm up and between intervals but tied it around my waist for the actual runs (3 minute walk intervals). Something with sleeves long enough to tie is much more practical than a gilet if you need to take it off.

Definitely ok to do low impact exercise on your non running days. On temperature, it may help to do a bit of exercise at home (a few mins of jumping or skipping) before you head out for your run so you've started to get your heart rate up before stepping outside. Another option is to head out with a thick coat over your running gear, walk 2.5 minutes out and 2.5 back, then drop off your coat at home and start the run. You might want to pick up the walking pace a bit - it's meant to be brisk.

If it’s absolutely freezing - as in icy, I wear a t shirt, arm warmers and a long sleeved jacket. Plus a neck snood thing and something to cover my ears (basically a headband). Bottom half is full leggings and maybe shorts over the top as my bottom gets cold! And gloves.
Then I can take stuff off easily if I get hot.

If it’s above freezing I will wear the same just a sleeveless jacket over the top. No gloves.

I basically make sure my core is warm and use layers.

Yesterday I wore my merino running top, running tshirt underneath and leg warmers too as I was freezing. It was very cold and I still took time to warm up!
