Anyone had a knee issue?

I'm a martial artist and runner, although running isn't responsible because I've had a 3 month break.

My knee started to hurt in December. I have rested it for 4 weeks and tried to re pick up my training this week and its worse than ever! I can't do things like squats, burpess and back kicks without pain. Please tell me it is just a glitch.

I have an appointment with a sports massage therapist but not sure this is the right route?

I’ve had to start wearing a knee support (the sort with velcro straps rather than just the tubigrip type) when I run. Sometimes it feels fine but sometimes it twinges, so I wear the support every time I run now.
Your appointment with the sports therapist is probably the best course of action - they’ll be able to advise you. Good luck - hope it gets sorted out (or just goes away by itself; these things sometimes do).

I saw a physio before xmas with hurty knees.
She worked on it and gave me exercises to do and it did improve but the pain continues to come and go.
I think it's actually worse if I do nothing so I've been going to the gym and to Pilates classes as normal.

Runner with several past knee injuries here ! The main thing is to get a proper diagnosis, your massage therapist may be able to help… but they may not, generally they only deal with soft tissue (muscles, tendons, fascia) so might not be so good on things like meniscus/cartilage. When I damaged my meniscus I ended up going to a sports physio who diagnosed it straight away and gave me a rehab plan. It was about £50 a session. I also went to the GP who referred me straight onto an nhs team that assessed this type of problem, I can’t for the life of me remember the name .

In the end the nhs mri confirmed the injury, I had a steroid injection through the nhs and this provided enough time to strengthen my knee. It took about a year though.

Could you exercise in that year?!! DD and I are meant to be going for our next few belts this year.

You need to see a gp or physio or podiatrist (who treats from lower back downwards).

Yep lots of knee trouble, turns out I have osteoarthritis and prone to tendinitis too. I have side to side knee instability so I use knee wraps when I do barbell squats in the gym, was doing fine lifting 80kg pre-pregnancy so yes you can get back to exercise if you find the correct supports.

Massage therapist may well have some ideas as to what it is, depending on their experience, but will be unlikely to be qualified to give you any sort of diagnosis. Personally I'd go to a physio.

lljkk · 07/01/2022 17:58

knees are supposed to be the most complicated joint in the body
I could talk about my diverse issues but truly might mean nothing about whatever is happening to OP

All I can say with confidence is that I've had a load of issues in past - but better now. It can get better

IME knee pain is often nothing to do with the knees.

It depends on your therapist if they're "just" doing sports massage , they're probably not the best person to diagnose properly. I'd see a sports oriented osteopath, by preference, to get diagnosed and go from there regarding treatment.

Icenii · 07/01/2022 18:23

They think it's to do with my thigh muscles being too tight and pulling the ligaments due to the way the pain presents and comparison to other thigh. If she can't improve it in a few sessions then she'll suggest a scan /refer on.

How are your glutes/quads?

I’d get into a good physio for assessment and see what they say.

Icenii · 07/01/2022 19:22

Well I had upped my kick strengthen exercises e.g stick leg into side kick position and hold it there / slow circular movements / slow kicks. Every morning.

I'll give her a few more goes and then go to a physio if no progress. It's strange as I can do a slow front kick no issue but if I sit it hurts to bring my leg parallel to the floor.
