I've signed up to a gym with a pool - help me design a regular schedule

Hi, I've just signed up to a gym with a pool. It's a five minute walk from my house so no excuses. My new year's resolution is to go at least 3 times per week to get fit. I look at all the machines and weights, and I'm baffled on where to start. I need some help in how to design a program that I can stick to, and enjoy. Something that takes up to an hour. I would like a combination of on the treadmill/stair climbers and a few weight things to tone me up.

Can anyone recommend schedules / sites to help me design a program?

I'm early 40s, a bit on the heavy side but not completely unfit.

The gym should offer you an induction session that teaches you have to use the equipment, what levels / weights you should be using and help to build you a programme. It's pretty irresponsible of them if they don't and it's impossible for us to advise without knowing what equipment they have and how easy / hard you find things. Also, all machines are different, what's level 10 on one cross trainer isn't the same as level 10 on another!

As @emmathedilemma says, that's what the gym team is there for! You should be entitled to at least one free session with them, as an induction, where they talk through your aims and objectives, then show you the equipment and help design a routine for you.

Agree with PPs - you should get an induction where you can discuss your goals and get help designing a programme.

I would aim for a mix of str myth and cardio but most importantly find activities that you enjoy (or hate the least Grin) so that you keep it up. Good luck!
