Worth getting an exercise bike?

I really need to lose weight! I've sorted a lot of eating habits in the last year but not the exercise!
I quite like the idea of getting up before the kids and jumping on a bike in front of the news and getting some exercise at the start of the day. Anyone got one with good results or will it end up in the box room???
I'm thinking low/mid range price NOT a pelaton as I can't remortgage the house at the mo...🤓

They are great for hanging clothes on Wink

Hellocatshome · 17/12/2021 18:58

Yep we have had one with the best of intentions, quite expensive for a clothes horse.

I have the peloton (bike and treadmill) and they get used 3-4 times a week. The price makes me do it!!!

coogee · 17/12/2021 19:05

I use on at the gym as part of a more comprehensive workout. Other people might disagree but I don't think cardio on it's own is that effective for weight loss.

You don’t need to get a bike. Go out for a run or follow exercise videos. I do Les Mills on demand 3-4 times a week at home and I don’t have a bike because it’s so expensive. I think you to have the motivation to exercise first before deciding on buying an expensive piece of equipment.

I have had great success with increasing my exercise level by purchasing a exercise bike. I picked up a second hand one very cheap on gumtree and it has been fantastic. I would say go for it!

I have a slim cycle from Argos. I love it. I do 20 to 60 minutes per day. Folds up out of the way.

Do it! I'm a runner but have a bike set up indoors on the turbo trainer and it's great. I use it for an hour at least 5 mornings a week, sometimes more. I get up early before the kids wake up...sometimes I just enjoy the peace and quiet, other times I watch the news or catch up TV. The bike is great because there's no worries about childcare and at this time of year when it's dark and icy early morning, I can still exercise when I otherwise wouldn't be able to run outdoors. It's about getting into a routine and sticking with it. Kit out the night before, drink made, and already to go straight out of bed. If I've got everything ready then I'm less likely to turn the alarm off and roll back over.

Can you try one out at a gym first? Try some spin classes before purchasing one.

I often get a bit bored with cardio and like to change, so only having a bike could get boring which stops you from exercising (expensive clothes horse).

I just did op, I only spent about £130 and it was easy to put together and it's really sturdy. People poo poo them, but for me to go from barely moving to 10 miles a day feels really good and it's helped my back!

EmmaStone · 20/12/2021 16:32

We've got an old spin bike, and during one of the lockdowns, I got a free trial for the Peloton app (full price 12.99 a month). I've been using it ever since - previously I never used the bike. I'd say having some structure to the workout is probably more useful than sitting and watching some telly - you're more likely to ride at an ambient speed otherwise. I also use the Peloton app for other things - running (outdoor and treadmill), yoga, strength, stretching etc.

It's not my only form of exercise, but it's been quite fun.

helpfulperson · 20/12/2021 16:35

I like mine because I can use it in a flat without my downstairs neighbours worrying about me coming through the ceiling like they would with exercise videos. Motivation varies but I do use it.

Beebopawhop · 20/12/2021 16:39

I wanted an exercise bike but my DH made me buy a rower instead and it's not used so trying to sell ...

SuperDuperC · 20/12/2021 16:53

Thanks so much everyone! Sorry if it seemed that I wrote and ran but I've seen all the advice, very helpful 👍🏻 I had trouble replying on the app!
Turns out my husband wants one too so we may get it as a joint pressie for ourselves! I know that he'll definitely use it even if I fall off the wagon! Thanks for the peloton advice too, thought you could only use the app with their bike 👍🏻

A spin bike and then use peloton or Les Mills app for spin classes.

Youaremypenguin · 28/12/2021 06:03

I've just ordered one. Had one years ago and did 30 minutes 5 days a week. Lost 8 inches of my waist in months.

I'm now recovering from knee injury and need to get moving after the last few years of working from home. I've also got resistance bands and I'm following a strengthening program set out by my physio. I'm amazed by what a difference 20 minutes of consistent targeted exercise is having on me.

Lizzim18 · 31/12/2021 18:05

If anyone wants a peloton referral I have a code BBUD7M which gives £100 off accessories and I get £100 off apparel.
