Okay after some advice over a bugbear of mine. This has happened a few times now. So if I'm doing an organised exercise event like a long distance challenge, running etc this is like my "therapy" time and I always plan for days and weeks for the event. Once I trained for a running event and at the start someone wanted me and her to stick together because she wanted company and was nervous about a hill. Didn't know who she was. Then yesterday as soon as the buzzer went at 8am someone started talking to me and saying we'll do the 12 miles together. I was so annoyed, I'd spent a lot of time preparing for the event and I had no idea who she was but she wanted company whole way around, me on the other hand wanted peace and quiet! I ended up having to go super slow at start so she got fed up and then tagged with someone else. But seriously, anyone else think it's a bit rude to just impose yourself on someone you don't know at an event? Especially when you don't know if they have personal goals. Any advice what to say in the moment? For next event I'm going to wear a bag over my head and make no eye contact with anyone ha ha!

These people are in all races and you don't have to say anything at all.. simply run a few places ahead, or slow down for a few seconds until they go ahead. It's unlikely you'd be exactly the same pace as someone else, so it's very easy to shake them off, I find.

Yes, it's rude of them and a bit weird. Needy, even.

Stick headphones on a pretend you didn't hear them!

I've not come across this but only really do the parkrun.

Yes it's a bit of an imposition.
As to what to say ... something like "ah sorry, I like to be in my own headspace for a run. Maybe catch you at the end"?

I would hate this! I would go with the headphones suggestion

Oh I love this!

I think I was so taken aback at the last event... It was a 12 mile challenge, everyone had instructions to follow for the route and checkpoints. Spent hours planning and preparing for it... And she just came up to me and said "Oh are you by yourself? Let's do this together!" So enthusiastically! I was like.. errr ummmm ohhh okayyy and then next thing I thought was "that's my day ruined" I was so cross. Fortunately I lost her in the crowd 🤣 but then spent next half hour worrying I'd offended her. I'm definitely keeping my head down at the start, no eye contact!!
