What do people recommend and where to buy from?

I need quite a lot of leg coverage and most of what's on offer seems to be shorts which are not very flattering.

Thanks

Try Decathlon?

Suasthuasanuas · 27/09/2021 18:30

Chain reaction is a good website. Just make sure to check size charts as brands can vary wildly.

Friend who is about 5 stone overweight seems to get hers from Wiggle.
She's faster than me, even though I'm not 5 stone overweight

FLAB also seems quite good quality.

Thanks for the suggestions!

Wiggle/ Chain reactions DHB brand. They go up to a 16. Sizing is accurate. Quality is good making them incredible value.

Don’t bother with 3/4’s. They’re only worth it if you cycle throughout the year and have an extensive cycling wardrobe. I only have a need for mine in spring for a few rides then it gets too warm and autumn for a few rides before it gets too cold. N’owt worse than chilly calves or sweaty backs of knees 😂

Go for a bib too. They are more comfortable as the bottoms stay in place. You don’t get an overhang of flesh. No ‘ghastly gap’ either where your jersey rides up. They are much cozier. Wee stops are marginally more faffy… but I’ve been using bibs forever and pissing in fields without issue 😂 In winter it’s not a problem as you just dress by pulling your bibs over last then put your gillet or jacket over the top to hide the bib.

DH who is a keen cyclist recommended wiggle to me when I wanted some cycling bib shorts and they are far better than the ones I bought from decathlon as they have superior padding (but were more expensive).

See, I wear my 3/4 all year round, except for a handful of days in the summer and winter, but 80% of the year, I wear capris (aka knicks). I get them from FLAB and Pearl Izumi.

I am just a recreational cyclist, so far summer only.

Not getting a bib as DH would fall off his bike laughing at me!

But do want to cover flabby thighs in lycra and avoid getting a sore arse after a long ride with some comfy padding.

I like the look of FLAB, the models on the website are larger than I am (size 14).

Like your name BikeRunSki those are all my sports too although not to any great level of competence. I know you've been on MN forever too.

@Tulipomania- I’m keen than competent!! And havn’t been able to afford to ski for 13 years!

But do get bibs - absolutely game changer in bike shorts coverage and comfort.

WhiskeryWoman · 28/09/2021 08:53

You can get shorts which are a longer leg. I only wear them just above the knee - I have a kalas and assos pair both of which finish mid-thigh and I hate them so don’t wear them. They are both unflattering! You can also get shorts that have a wide band and kind of stretchy sticky surface - DHB do some as do Rapha (their cheaper ones). This keeps them in place and stops them squeezing the leg so you get a bulge where the shorts end. Not sure why anyone would laugh at you wearing bibs 🤷‍♀️ for a start they wouldn’t even know. It kinda makes sense to be as comfy as possible.

Chain Reaction we’re selling off some Ale women’s bib shorts. £120 down to £50. I bought one pair and decided they were so good I bought another two. I’m a size 10, 5ft 6 and went for Large. Other than DHB and Rapha I always tend to size up with any kind of cycling bottoms.

Now is a good time to buy as a lot of the retailers are selling off their summer stock. Merlin and Sigma Sports are also good places to look.

VeloVixen is good as they only stock women’s kit and it’s a website very much aimed at ordinarily proportioned women. They seek out decent brands who really think about women’s needs/ shape.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/09/2021 08:58

Do look at VeloVixen, they are a brilliant site and have a range of clothes. There is also a "chat" FB. page which is great for this sort of advice - I think it's just called VeloVixenChat. I'm a fairweather leisure cyclist and love the VV chat page as I've had loads of great advice.
