Road running trainers recommendation

My Brooks Glycerin have broken- heels rub, due to support protruding. I need a new pair quickly, and have tried on Hoka One One Clifton, Brooks Adrenaline GTS and New Balance Vongo. Apparently, I need some support, but it's news to me. Does anyone have any of these or another make to recommend? The reviews are all mixed. I do do some off road, but not much. I run about 20k a week.

Hoka Cliftons are neutral sole (not supportive) and I'm not sure what the parallel model is. I have Cliftons, because I like that level of cushioning.

Others I have like are the Mizuno Waverider and Asics Dynaflyte - though I found they didn't last well - heel tab went.

I love my adrenaline gts and no wearing of heels, also do about 20km a week.

ceeveebee · 19/09/2021 19:34

I have Nike react infinity run which I find very supportive, also run about 20k a week

Thank you. When they assessed me on the machine, my gait was similar in Hoka and Brooks Adrenaline- no idea why, but the Hoka have quite a wide sole despite no support. Are you pleased with the Cliftons? I will look at the others too.

Palavah · 19/09/2021 21:31

I'd go to a running shop like Runner's Need and get told what to buy.

Palavah · 19/09/2021 21:32

(after gait analysis etc)

Another vote for Brooks Adrenaline gts.

lazysummer · 19/09/2021 23:27

Thank you.

I've had lots of the older models of the Brooks Adrenaline GTS which still look like new apart from the condition of the soles being worn out, but the current model (GTS21) wore into holes at the heels and round the edge of the cuff after less than 200km. I sent them back and got a full refund, even the guy in the shop said they don't seem to be made as well as they used to and I've seen people reporting similar on facebook groups.

I'm on my third pair of Brooks Adrenalin - just kept re-ordering online during lockdown. I definitely need support or I get plantar fasciitis (spelling? - sore instep anyway). No problems with them.

Have you been properly fitted at Runners Needs or similar, though?

lazysummer · 20/09/2021 19:06

I have read reviews of the Adrenaline wearing out really quickly. I did have some gait analysis, but I don't think I ran for long enough.

lazysummer · 24/09/2021 22:12

Thanks for responses. Any more recommendations for Hoka, Brooks, New Balance or any others to consider?

I wear Adrenalines, and need the extra support they offer. I've done well over 1,000 miles this year and probably changed to my current pair in about April, so I get a lot of miles out of them.

I was in Saucony Guide 8 before that. I had 6 pairs of them! But the Guide 9s and 10s didn't suit me at all.

I would find a good local running shop though, and use their knowledge abd expertise. What any of us like/use is neither here nor there really. A good shop should look at your gait, suggest appropriate shoes, and then watch you running in them on a treadmill. My local shop won't sell you shoes that they can see don't work for you, even if you think they feel comfy.

My local shop is so good - when I need new shoes I let them know I'm coming in, and they have a load of shoes ready for me to try, because they know my (awkward) feet very well. I credit them with over 6,000 miles since I was last injured.

Hotcuppatea · 24/09/2021 22:22

I've trained for the London Marathon in Hoka Gaviators. They're very supportive with loads of bounce and cushioning. Ask to try them on at your local running shop. They should be able to do a gait analysis for you.

Stilltalkstotrees · 24/09/2021 22:26

I have worn Saucony, Brooks and Hoka over the last 10+ years and spent a fortune. Was injured for a long while and ended up buying some v cheap Karrimor Tempo 6, just for walking and going to the gym. They're fab! Suit me perfectly and I now have 3 pairs.

greywell · 24/09/2021 22:34

Thank you. I will revisit one of the local shops.

I've got adrenaline GTS 21s, I'm on my second pair. I do about 15-20 miles per week. I find them very comfortable and supportive.

CalmConfident · 24/09/2021 22:44

Another adrenaline wearer here ! They work well for me, on my 3rd pair

lazysummer · 27/09/2021 00:06

Thanks for all the recommendations.

careerchangeperhaps · 27/09/2021 07:08

Saucony Guide ISO are my go-to. I also need support and these do the job nicely.
