Do any of you swim??

I don't exercise, I've never been into sports my whole life. I am losing weight at the mo started with diet and I'm pleased with how it's going but want to exercise too.

The only sport/activity I have ever enjoyed (aside from tennis which you need a partner for) is swimming but I'm nervous to get started. I moved a few years ago and never been to the local pool, it's not in the nicest area and I worry about turning up to try and swim lanes in peace.

Also I'm overweight with HH boobs so a swimsuit in my size would be very expensive, what if I don't commit to swimming then I've wasted my money?

Basically, how do I get started with something like this? Any tips?

I found it much more comfortable to wear a bikini than a swimming costume, for boob support. You could wear a bikini top under a costume, or pop a rash vest on top if you feel more comfortable.

Does your local pool offer any lane swimming sessions?

Just give it a try, tell yourself you'll do ten minutes. I bet you'll be in for longer.

Honestly, you get started by just going. I mean this kindly, but your issues are all in your head. Buy a swimming costume, use it as a reason to commit and go for it!

(I am the same. When I want to do something, but am unsure about some of the practicalities, I think about those over an over again until I make them so big it can stop me doing it)

Go for it!! Unfit and fat but now go 3 times a week. I started in the slow lane and now in medium lane. I have got faster and stronger and I feel much much better.

You have to be carrying at least 2 stone extra to even fit in at my pool.

£3.50 with delivery, size 18 suit on Ebay.

That's half the price of the cost of a single swim session at some centres.

Goggles are my perenial nightmare expense. £36 and the damn things leak. Suits are the easy cost to bear!!

Go for it! You just try it out and then you figure out what you need to do after you’ve been a few time.

I don’t like Lane swimming I just go to the public sessions during school time so I can just go at my own pace and there aren’t really that many serious swimmers there or many children either, depends on your schedule though.

I’ve just started going again myself it’s the only exercise I like too.

Have you got a leisure club near you? We have quite an affordable one near us (not David Lloyd standards!) and it's really pleasant and very different atmosphere from the local pool. I try to only go for the adult only swims, I find in the morning it's usually lovely older ladies with the men at the gym! (To generalise!)

Go for it OP, I started swimming again about 3 months ago once the restrictions lifted. I am very overweight (size24\26) so I was nervous. No one bats an eyelid. I take my towel with me and sit it at the side of the pool, it makes me feel more comfortable walking through the changing rooms. I have hit the jackpot at my local pool as almost every time I have been I've had the pool to myself. I go for 12 noon and aim for 40 mins, I'm a good swimmer and I'm getting faster. I do at least 2 sessions a week I'm aiming for 3. I got 2 good costumes from simply be and that's me. That 40 mins is the most relaxing of my week it's bliss. Go for it you won't regret it.Daffodil

Just do it.
HH boobs are practically a uniform for swimming!
Swimming is very comfortable for people who struggle with lots of other exercise due to size, fitness, injury or age.

A friend of mine swims in a sports bra under a cheapy one piece swimming costume. She says it's really comfy.

But I agree, just go for it and do it. I have gone from swimming 10 lengths with a rest after each one, to swimming 70 lengths at a time without stopping, and I know I'm getting stronger.

I’m finding my pool very empty at the moment, and you have to book in advance so the numbers are still limited as well.

There are all sorts of shapes and sizes. I always just think ‘well done for giving this a go’!

@ShinyMe
Wow that’s some serious fitness you built up!

Yes, I swim a lot, mostly outdoors where having a good layer of 'bioprene' (aka fat) is considered to be a good thing especially by those who swim all year without wetsuits.
The Sports Direct boyleg costume is very popular and keeps everything gathered in nicely for £13

I was a size 32/34 when I did a swimming challenge for charity - swimming the distance of the channel. No one battered an eye. I'd be more nervous going now despite now being a size 22 as I now have a condition that means I have a large section of hanging skin on one leg, plus I have a lot of saggy skin from the weightloss but I'm going to get up the courage soon as I love swimming.
