Wetsuit for Pool swimming

Weird question possibly. I am underweight and cold all the time. The pool where i take my children is blooming freezing in my opinion and no matter how far or fast I swim I never warm up. I dread going.

Would I be considered a total idiot if I wore some kind of neoprene suit?! It may help me get my body temp somewhere above freezing.

Don’t want everyone staring at me any more than they do with my skinniness…

I’d look at a cold water swimming wetsuit. You’ll have the mobility and it’ll still retain the heat. Triathlon sites may help.

How old are the children? My pool does sessions for 0-4yo where the keep the water warmer for the babies. I much prefer taking my toddler to that, as much for my benefit as hers.

Some Muslim women often wear wetsuit type outfits for the pool (not just burkinis).
People do stare sometimes but they get over it once you’re in the pool under the water really.

Meloncurse · 25/08/2021 18:25

I'd try an insulated rash vest first. I have one from Decathlon.

TheWoleb · 25/08/2021 18:27

Some pools dont allow wetsuits so you'd need to check first.
Might be better looking into a full body swimming suit for cold water instead of a 3/4mm wetsuit.

BikeRunSki · 25/08/2021 18:31

You’ll need a swim specific wetsuit, which are usually made for “natural/breaststroke” or “front crawl” swimming positions. Neoprene is quite buoyant, and an ordinary beach/surfing etc wetsuit won’t allow you to swim.

How about a thin neoprene vest? neoprene rash vest

I’d also check with the pool about if they have any regulations on what you can wear to swim in.

liveforsummer · 25/08/2021 18:44

My brother tried to wear wetsuit too as he (and I) have raynauds and swimming pools are torture. He said ant council run leisure centres he tried don't allow them.

BikeRunSki · 25/08/2021 18:57

neoprene swimsuit this will keep your core warm at least

gogohm · 25/08/2021 19:17

Pools generally don't allow wetsuits for general swimming but do allow modest swimwear. Check before you spend money

megletthesecond · 25/08/2021 19:20

I'd have loved this when mine were little. I used to go blue and eventually stopped taking them.
I'm OK doing lengths but not doing airy fairy splashing around.

kennycat · 25/08/2021 19:24

Thanks for the advice all. It’s a school swimming Pool so no option of warmer sessions unfortunately. I’ll follow those links you’ve all helpfully put. Many thanks; and good advice to check they will allow alternative attire!!

thewildswimstore.com/products/fourth-element-women-s-thermocline-long-sleeve-swimsuit-front-zip These could be good too. Look like a swimsuit but are a bit warmer.

SwanShaped · 25/08/2021 19:28

Also have long sleeves in case your arms are cold.

liveforsummer · 25/08/2021 19:37

Good luck OP. I just avoid swimming entirely (unless outdoors in a hot country in July) I can't manage the cold and hate the getting changed standing on a cold wet floor after. I've spent a LOT of money over the years on swim lessons and holiday courses over the years as compensation

Yee gods that’s pricey!!! Although if it prevented me dying if hyperthermia it may be worth it!

A regular wetsuit is no good for swimming. I bought one for sea swimming as it’s too buoyant to actually swim in!

SwanShaped · 25/08/2021 21:17

Yeah it is really expensive! Depends how much you go swimming I guess. And also finances!!

BogRollBOGOF · 26/08/2021 00:03

I use a shortie wetsuit from Decathlon and haven't had an issue with it at several public pools. Makes squatting around in tepid water much more comfortable!
(Not an issue with lane swimming when your muscles warm up)
