Anyone lost weight by skipping?

NotTheBupcake · 23/08/2021 14:43

I need to lose weight. I've gone from size-12-is-a-bit-loose to size-14-is-a-bit-tight over lockdown, so I need to tackle it.

I keep reading that skipping is really good for weight loss and general fitness. Has anyone tried it? Was it a success? And did you follow a particular program, or did you just skip for 30 minutes a day or something?

Skipping calories will help you lose weight.

I mean rope skipping, like jumping rope!

3500 calories to burn a lb of fat, that’s a heck of a lot of skipping (or any other exercise)!

NotTheBupcake · 23/08/2021 15:53

Well... yes. Can you suggest a better type of exercise? Basically skipping is something I can do fairly easily, it's cheap since I have a skipping rope already.

I'm asking whether anyone has used skipping as a means to lose weight, and if it worked, are there particular programs that are useful?

Skipping is a good form of exercise and works lots of different muscles.

Generally, you don't exercise weight off, but you can become leaner.

If you exercise, you will feel better in general and there are benefits like improved circulation. Being outside is good etc.

Following with interest as I too have just bought a slipping rope in the hope it helps me get a bit fitter and lose the two stone I need to lose!

Thanks! I think if I just felt a bit fitter I'd feel much better about myself! I had baby #2 a couple of years ago and never really lost the baby weight, and then with lockdown it just piled on even more. Now I find any exercise really hard work, so I'd like to get my fitness levels built up again!

With exercise e.g. running, the hardest part is getting your trainers on and getting out through the door.
If you are unfit or out of shape, you will see improvement very quickly if you do it regularly. Start small and build on it.

Pilates, weights (like Body Pump) or Spinning are good for quick results.

If you exercise a fair bit, you get used to watching what you eat, in a good way . Ignore any suggestiions that you need lots of carbs for energy as you want to use up the energy stored in your body.

Even if you hate every minute of whatever exercise you do, you'll find thar it has taken your mind of other things and you'll feel better afterwards.

If you can find exercise you enjoy, great. Remember when you were a little kid and enjoyed dancing or running around - aerobics or circuits might bring that feeling back.

One good thing about skipping is that it's portable and cheap.

As you put on more muscle, you'll feel stronger and your metabolic rate will improve (I think).

SkinnyEx · 23/08/2021 18:29

The (I think) was because I am not a medical person or a PT.

NotTheBupcake · 23/08/2021 19:35

Thanks @SkinnyEx. Running is awkward because for a lot of the year by the time DH gets home it's too dark to run (and I can't go before that because I can't leave the kids).

So I need something I can do at home with minimal equipment!

Wish I could skip my pelvis floor does not agree with it 🤣
I’ve discovered team body project on you tube a few months ago and loving it. It’s the first time I’ve actually look forward to exercise which mean I do it and if I have a break I actually want to start again.
Having done some exercises also helps me want to stay on track with food as well.

If you have a smart TV get Jillian Michaels 30 day shred on Amazon video for £4.99

Alternatively do Yoga with Adrienne for free on YouTube.

I have the same issue with dark nights, in the end I got a head torch and good reflective running wear. I also go in the morning while DH is having breakfast. I do couch to 5k when I run. I also go through phases of doing evening yoga/Pilates classes.

Ultimately though the only way to lose weight is to change your diet. You can't outskip a bad diet. Any exercise you do will tone you up and make you healthier but it will have limited impact on your waistline.

SkinnyEx · 24/08/2021 12:13

The Davina DVDs are said to be good.

You can run in the dark, as long as you stay in well-lit areas.

You can incorporate exercise into your schedule by walking where possible. I find that often it takes just as long to go somewhere in the car as it does on foot by the time I've found somewhere to park. It does take longer to walk if you have little ones though.

NotTheBupcake · 24/08/2021 12:23

I wouldn't feel safe running in the dark around here, and I know I'd use it as an excuse not to bother!

I'll check out those DVDs and YouTube suggestions, thanks!

I do walk as much as I can, but it's tricky with the kids as they take ages to get anywhere! School, for example, is in walking distance for me, but it would be too far for the kids to walk. Also I need to start work straight afterwards, and I'd be late if I had to walk home.

I try to go for a good walk every weekend though.

I did skipping, running and home dvds to lose weight a few years ago and it really worked. Skipping is very hard and a sweaty workout for sure. I used to do about 20 mins a day and then 150 squats straight after and it used to kill!

Looubylou · 25/08/2021 09:29

I wouldn't rely on skipping to lose weight. It's obviously high impact, and also very physically demanding. It takes a lot if practice to build up the skill and fitness level to keep going any length if time. I'd plan to do a bit of skipping as part of a wider exercise plan.

cad186 · 28/08/2021 09:23

I love skipping. I started for fitness/weight reasons but now just do it because I love it. I started off doing 30 seconds on 30 seconds off maybe for ten minutes and built up. It isn't high impact if you keep your jumps low, just be careful of shin splints if you overdo it too much at the start. If you check out instagram there is quite a big jumprope community, have a look at Lauren.jumps there are all different tricks/routines etc so there is always something new to do. Skippingwithsarah has got a beginners programme to follow too but there are loads of other people on there. I could spend hours outside skipping now it is very addictive! Have fun!

cad186 · 28/08/2021 09:32

Also in terms of weight loss I went from about 10st 4 to around 9st 3 but I also did about 3 weights sessions every week too which I would highly recommend. Think the weights made a massive difference for me. I just went on Instagram and found a few people I liked and picked out the exercises that I preferred and put them into a routine. I really like Aliceliveing on there.

Skipping will definitely burn calories but can be hard to do for a sustained period of time.

I signed up for an 'our parks' account and did their couch to fitness programme which was fantastic. Completely free, and starts easier then progresses over 9 weeks so by the end you're doing exercises you didn't think you'd be capable of at the beginning.

If you don't want to sign up, then it's available as a playlist on YouTube, I liked the account as it saved progress and you can add notes about reps and where you needed a break.
