Protein Shakes Advice

hiltz · 07/07/2021 17:01

I have a DS 18yrs old and DD 15yrs old and they have both started going to the gym. They have also started taking protein shakes ( USN, diet fuel, extra lean) to help build muscle. I am not comfortable with this at all. I need some advice.
Thanks

I was not familiar with the brand, so Googled it. It's marketed as a meal replacement. Are they using it as a meal replacement or simply as a top up for protein? If the former, why? If the latter they may be better off with a brand that is specifically meant as a protein supplement only rather than a meal replacement.

I myself have a protein shake (well, actually protein powder whizzed into coffee as the coffee counteracts some of the vicious sweetness of the powder) every morning before a work out. I'm trying to build muscle and it's a convenient way for me to increase protein intake close to my workouts.

I would question who has told your children to take protein, and why, especially the 15 year old. I have no knowledge of children's protein requirements or optimal ways of building muscle. Why do your children say they want to build muscle? It's not inherently a bad thing to want, but it does sound a bit odd for someone that age. Unless they are wanting a career in the fitness industry, I suppose.

What are you uncomfortable about, and what do you need advice on?

If they're getting too much protein it might be a problem, but if they are having one protein shake after a workout and eating proper meals, it's unlikely they're getting too much. I mean, it's unlikely that they're getting any benefit, and generally "real food" is both more nutritious and nicer than a supplement. But presumably you wouldn't be worried if they started snacking on chicken breasts and tinned tuna?

I use protein shakes because I am a vegetarian who weight trains, so I need the protein to build muscle and there is a limit to the quantity of lentils I can manage...

Hey protein shakes can be a great way to supplement your protein intake if it's high but if they have generally just started at the gym and are doing it as they think it's what they are suppose to do they would get same amount or bit more protein from eating chicken.

I'm a powerlifter I eat set amount of protein a day and there is only so much chicken I can stomach so would have a protein shake to top up and meet my macros.

Protein is for recovery and that's why it will build muscle as it helps with muscle repair

Carbs iand fats s what you need as energy source so don't let them think they are the enemy and they just need to consume tons of protein shakes to be big and healthy
