Knee pain.

Hi,

I work out daily and have always suffered with dodgy knees but it's got a lot worse. The pain is behind one of my knees and calf and is ok in the day but gets a lot worse towards the end of the day. Has anybody else experienced this? Not sure what to try?

Do you stretch? What sort of workouts? (And are your shoes appropriate?) Do you drink enough water?

I get knee pain from having tight hamstrings & IT bands. Sports massages, stretching (every day, regardless of exercise) and foam rolling have helped hugely.

The stretching is nice (I do love yoga!), the foam rolling and sports massages can be horrific tbh 😂 but well worth it.

I do a lot of hiit home workouts. I only really started working a year ago and my knees would always hurts whilst working out but this pain is something else. It's only in the one leg and feels like a dull ache behind the knee and calf. It's fine in the morning but come 5pm it comes on. I always think the worse. I defiantly think yoga would be a good shout.

I also have dodgy knees. I googled ‘knee-friendly exercises’ and found Pahla B on YouTube. She’s great, I think, especially if like me you’re ‘a woman of a certain age’, but there are plenty of other instructors too. You probably know this already, but I didn’t (until Pahla B explained during a knee-friendly workout): when bending your knees, you shouldn’t let your knee go over your ankle as that puts a strain on the knee. Knowing this has made a huge diffference to me. Also, would you think about seeing a Physio? That also helped me enormously.

You need to stop the workouts altogether for now and rest it for a week and see how that goes.

I'm only 31. I always think the worse and hope it's not arthritis. I'm going to take a break from working out and see if it helps.

I'd see a physiotherapist to see if there is anything actually wrong. Whether or not there is, they can usually recommend suitable exercises to help and can advise on what to avoid (if anything) and for how long.

I’d second the stretching (hip flexor stretches and glute bridges) and foam rolling the IT band. I always notice that rolling hurts like hell the first day I do it after not doing it, but if I do it most days, things loosen up.
