Running advice

Hi
So I’m very overweight - I need to loose at least 6 stone.
I’m eating healthy and want to start running.

I don’t want to do any damage- so thinking of starting to walk and then slowly do cough 2 5k.

For someone very overweight is this realistic?

Any advice for starting out running?

I’ve got a very good treadmill which I’ll use until I get a bit more confident to go outside

Starting walking and then moving onto C25k sounds like a great plan. Once you can comfortably walk 30+ minutes uou can give week 1 a go, taking it really really slowly at the start. The healthunlocked C25k forum is a great place for tips and moral support. Please do try going outside, maybe with a friend for moral support. There's something about exercising outside that really boosts the mood and encourages you to keep going. Good luck!

can you walk 5k non stop? If so, then I'd start c25k but don't expect it to have a huge impact on weight loss as it doesn't really burn enough calories to make much difference.

I’m hoping with Reducing my carb intake and increasing my fat intake plus walking/running will help me loose weight- my next option is weight loss surgery which I want to avoid.

I thought running was the best exercise for weight loss?

You need to burn around 3500 calories to burn a lb of fat. Running burns around 100 calories a mile (maybe a bit more if you're heavier) so a couple of c25k sessions a week isn't going to have an impact on weight loss. Diet for weight loss, exercise for fitness!

I have just got a treadmill.

I need to lose weight but my main motivation is cardiovascular fitness.
My method is to get heart rate up to about 80% of its maximum, which is puffing a bit but could still hold a conversation.

Try this for as long as possible on treadmill. After a relatively short amount of time (3 weeks ish) you will notice a considerable increase in speed or time needed to get to puffing stage.

Oh and don't concentrate on weight concentrate on you clothes getting looser.
Don't "drink" calories.
And enjoy whatever you do.

Hi OP - definitely start slowly.
Don't feel like you should be pushing things and start running too quickly - that is how you will injure yourself.
Download Strava (just the free version) and use it to track your walks. Aim first for time - to get to 30 minutes.
Then try to increase your speed/distance within 30 minutes.
But again - take it slowly

The advice for runners is just to add 10% per week for distance and it's really important to do this.

When you are ready to try running/c25K - see if your local leisure centre or running club is putting on a class or course - much more fun to do it with others and they will also make sure you warm up and cool down properly

Running is a great all round exercise - but you will need to do some complimentary things like yoga or pilates to strengthen your core and build your muscles in diferent directions. There are lots of free vids on YouTube etc - (I like "Pilatesforrunners" on instagram)

Sadly it is true that 80% of weightloss is down to diet, 20% to exercise
The exercise will make you feel better and get you toned up, but if you eat back your calories burned you'll get nowhere.
So def check out the Weightloss threads on here. The 5:2 threads have been going for years and they have great advice, or what ever floats your boat to make sure you are changing your eating habits for the better long term (ie don't try crash diets etc!)
