Resting heart rate

Please offer me reassurance.

My resting HR has dropped from 50 to 40 in the last year. That's according to my fitbit.

I am 40ish and have exercised all my life, defo haven't got fitter this last year.

Bit worried it's slowly stopping!

Take a manual measurement to check, it may not be picking up correctly.

Ah yeah that's a good plan, I did wonder if its more about the fitbit than my heart.

Thats very low, mines 57 according to my fitbit, i’m 46 and do run regularly but i’m not convinced fitbits are all that accurate so I take it with a pinch of salt. Yours must still be very low though, you are incredibly fit - well done!

A heart rate in the 40’s in very very low.
Get an Oxi meter and see a doctor

It's not awful to have a low resting rate... thought I'd heard a random stat that F1 drivers have rates of 40-50bpm?

Maybe just Google 'safe' lower rates - as long as you aren't passing out or anything you're probably OK?

Beautyinreality · 05/04/2021 19:18

Have taken it manually a couple of times today and I think it is in the 40s. But I feel fine and Google says it can be that low in athletes. So I will take that.

Will take my worry on to something else no doubt!

Under 60bpm is defined as bradycardia. If you're not an athlete OP you should see your GP just to be on the safe side.

AuntieStella · 06/04/2021 13:14

Does your heart rate rise during exercise?

If it doesn't, you need to see a doctor as a matter of some urgency

And perhaps see a doctor routinely to discuss bradycardia

My wrist monitor often puts me down into the 50s (which is plausible f counted when very relaxed).

But have regular ECGs as part of monitoring for an unrelated condition, and that usually finds that my daytime resting rate is in the 60s.

Devices can be very wrong!

tendofether · 08/04/2021 21:47

Hypothyrodism can cause low resting heart rate. I can tell if I'm undermedicated because my heart rate drops.

merryhouse · 08/04/2021 21:59

AuntieStella I have quite a low resting heart rate. The rate rises during exercise, quite high quite quickly if the gym treadmill is to be believed. It then takes a while (more than is considered optimal, when I measured a few years ago) to get back to normal.

What might be the outcomes of bradycardia?

I also have the thing where my heart beats faster when breathing in than when breathing out. And I can feel my heartbeat if I stop to think about it, which I only recently discovered is not usual.

I don't have any diagnosed health conditions.
