Weighted hula hoop - does it work?

Just that really! I’ve seen a lot of people online doing hula hooping but wanted to see if anyone had actually done it and seen results? Is it worth it? If so any recommendations on which to get? Thanks!

Work to lose weight/shape up or to learn to hula hoop?
I can hula hoop with my weighted loop but I haven't shaped up or lost weight because I would find it too boring to use as a fitness tool

If you have more staying power than me it would definitely have an impact on your middle. You can feel it
If you are like me get one that breaks down into sections so it's easier to store when not in use Grin

DS plays with it occasionally but otherwise it sits there taking up space.

I use my weighted hola hoop while watching the tv, currently keep it going for 20 mins aiming for 30 minutes now

CrystalMaisie · 04/04/2021 22:47

I used to do a hula hoop class and it gave me bruises on the top of my hip bones.

RandomDent · 04/04/2021 23:03

I have one but I can’t get it to spin! So no, it’s not working for me. Grin

midlifesomething · 05/04/2021 00:27

I tripped over mine and snapped it! Am waiting for a replacement but tbh only managed less than a minute, 20 minutes is amazing, i’ll keep trying though!

AuntieStella · 06/04/2021 08:27

I got one that broke into sections for storage.

It kept breaking into sections when I was using it. I never did figure out if I was doing something wrong!

I used to go to powerhoop classes and found it toned very well. It can be used for more than just hooping and you can get a full body workout.

Unfortunately it fell out of fashion and I can't find any classes now. I still have my hoop and have found a few YouTube videos using them.

I love hooping - I can now hoop non-stop for about 20 minutes - I just put my earphones in a go for it!

I use a big gray one which breaks in to sections but can't remember the make.

Couple of things -- the first few times, you will get bruises around your hips and you wonder if its worth it - the pain will go! When you start it spinning to begin with, push back and forth rather than side to get it going - its kind of like an undulating motion. You can then move onto other motions (side to side, up and down your torso etc).

RandomDent · 06/04/2021 20:16

You’ve inspired me - I dug my hoop back out! My top score was 9 rotations - a record for me! Smile

EssexLioness · 06/04/2021 20:41

I persisted for a couple of weeks but I was covered in bruises from my hoop, which would be made worse each time I used it. Is there any way of reducing this? I do bruise fairly easily but honestly this looked terrible and was so painful

Apple40 · 06/04/2021 20:58

I wear a jumper to hoola hoop this helps my hips but the more you practice they get used to it so no more bruises. my hoola hoop is a one piece set up , my mother in laws goes together in sections and is always bendy and falls apart .

EssexLioness · 06/04/2021 21:40

Thanks will try a bit of extra padding and see if that helps, though I thought the fat on my hips would’ve been padding enough! 😂

Hula hooping works wonders if you keep at it. Really tones your middle and improves your posture and balance.

Unfortunately, as this thread proves, it doesn't work if you stop after a couple of goes, only do it vicariously through Insta, or buy a hoop and then pretend not to see it leaning in the corner.

When I used mine regularly it strengthened my core so that I could walk easily in perilously high heels (yes - that long ago!). Now I use it too rarely, even though I know it works.

The woman who is 'huladancercise' on insta is amazing, she's made such an impressive change to her physique and energy levels over just one year. (I honestly don't give a damn about most SM ...)

Aroundthelight · 07/04/2021 00:03

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good weighted hoop? My cheapy Argos one keeps bending or coming apart which is limiting my hooping!

dementedpixie · 07/04/2021 07:38

I have a branded 'powerhoop' as I went to powerhoop classes. Probably a bit more expensive though

alittleprivacy · 08/04/2021 17:05

I started using a weighted hoop in December but switched to a dance hoop a few months back as you can do more with it. I can move it from spinning it over my head to on body hooping and back in the air, reasonably fluidly. I’ve learned how to drop my arm to switch the direction of the hoop. And switch the hoop from waist to hips and back.

I find that the more I have to learn and work on, the more inclined I am to pick it up and play around with it. I definitely find it helps with pelvic alignment and works my transverse abdominus. Reducing back pain, keeping my lower stomach flatter and improving my posture.
