Shin splints?

I have an injury on/in my right lower leg- a couple of inches below the knee (shin splints?) and I'm looking for some advice as to what sort of injury it is and how best to treat it.

I'm pretty sure I caused it by doing some high impact moves from an online video - jumping squats etc.. I don't normally do them as I'm fairly nervous of hurting my knees, and the injury started the day after I did these.

The weird thing is that I don't feel any pain at all when I'm running - I can go out 3 times a week without any issue at all either during or straight afterwards. The pain comes when I've been sitting for a while and then go to stand up, sometimes when I'm walking downhill/downstairs, and most annoyingly at night when the pain wakes me up. I assume at night its that I move and end up with the injured area being pressed on.

I have cut back on any hilly walks and squats/lunges etc.. but I really don't want to cut back on my running unnecessarily, especially as during that time I am pain free. On the other hand I'm nervous that I don't know if I'm doing myself more damage by carrying on...It has been improving but was bad again last night.

Has anyone had a similar injury - painful when body 'cold' but fine when running?

Hi don't know if it's shin splints but I have had injuries where I feel better running but I get pain when I move after being stationary. Movement increases circulation and warms the area, which helps with pain. I think the general rule is, if it's worse after running (not immediately but say a few hours after or the same day), that is probably a sign to take it easy. But you know your own body and what it can do.

I have sciatic hamstring pain just now - can run for hours but a hamstring stretch from cold really hurts. I know I have to limit my mileage to stop it getting worse

Thanks for replying. I think I’ll ease of mileage and hills for a bit to be on the safe side. And pay more attention to exactly when the pain gets worse in case it is the day after a run etc..
Sorry to hear about your sciatic hamstring pain hope it eases up soon

Thanks BoogieFeet. Sciatica is going nowhere unfortunately but at least it's not getting any worse.

I have had shin splints in the past and they went away fairly quickly after a bit of rest and time, so hopefully you will have a similar experience since youre being careful.

Injuries are so frustrating especially now when running is pretty much all we've got
