Are proper running shoes meant to be agony?

I started running in my old, flat, holey Nike Roshe trainers and completed the couch to 5k but with knee and hip joint pain I decided to buy some shoes which are designed for running in and bought the Nike Pegasus.

I've had to abort the last two runs after 10 minutes because of awful calf muscle pain as well as very sore feet.

They fit and are comfy until I am actually running in them.

(I can't go did a gait analysis as no running shops are open)

Is it a case of wearing them in? Will it get better!? Thank you.

clary I don’t think there’s any problem with running daily if you’re an experienced runner and you’re used to it. I do think it’s likely to be too much for someone who has recently completed C25K and is getting used to new trainers though.
I wouldn’t continue to wear trainers that were causing me any sort of acute pain. But, I think a muscular ache is likely caused by overdoing it and getting used to trainers that are more cushioned / alter how you run slightly.

Calf pain can often be due to the heel drop of your trainers. The Roshe ones are probably quite a low heel drop whereas the Pegasus are 10mm. I'm more surprised you don't have shin splints from the Roshes!

Hello everyone!

Boring update.

I took a couple of days off as suggested and then ran 20 mins and found the pain was lower. After another rest day this morning I ran a 5k and got a personal best! (35.18 Blush)

My calves don't hurt at all but after 3k my feet were starting to hurt and by 5k they hurt quite a bit. I even took a paracetamol before the run.

The pain is in both feet under the front balls of my feet (under the toes?) and also a lot on the right side of my right foot - the bit the other side of the arch)

What would you recommend I do? Now that the calves are okay is it likely to be the same with the feet after a while? I can go to a sports shop today but they don't have a gait analysis service.

My last 5k effort in my old shoes was 39 mins so I feel like these have helped!!

Oh bloody hell, I bought some Pegasus Zoom during lockdown when I couldn’t get to the proper running shop for gait analysis. They were an expensive mistake!!! £125 later and I hate putting them on. I get real foot pain when I run in them which I don’t in my other ‘fashion’ trainers that I used to run in.
I need to wait for the shop to open and get measured up properly and try again. Mine were definitely money down the drain!
As an aside, they are totally ugly and not the kind of thing I would wear anywhere other than pounding the pavements in the dark Hmm
