None that I’ve heard good things about.

Have you looked at Hal Higdon’s 10k novice programme?

fredred · 31/01/2021 10:17

Will have a look, thankyou

10k Trainer by C25k

Twinkie01 · 31/01/2021 10:22

There's a good one called bridge to 10k

ohhhhitsme · 10/02/2021 22:25

How is it going? Did you find an app?

A few people told me "if you can run 5k, you can run 10k" and they were right. I was restricting myself to just running 5 or a little bit more each time, and was planning to build myself up, until one day I headed out to do 6 or 7k and did 10.
(At this point I was doing 3 or 4x 5k runs a week.)
If your breathing is great during a 5k, you won't be far off running 10

fellrunner85 · 11/02/2021 06:06

@ohhhitsme is right. If you can run 5k, you can run 10k. It's just about adding a bit more distance each time, slowing down, and keeping going.
The climb up between the two is very slight, which is why good apps are hard to find - they're just not necessary.

IME, the hardest bit in starting to run is getting to running constantly, for 10 minutes, for the first time. Once you can do that, getting to 5k isn't so hard.

There then isn't much of a difference between running 5k and running 10k. The gap between 10k and a half marathon is more difficult though, and the gap between a half and a full marathon harder still!

SerialRelocator · 11/02/2021 06:37

Exactly what happened to me. Running 5ks, then a few 6ks, a 7k.
Then one run I'd been going quite slowly due to poor ground conditions so my heart & lungs weren't pushed at all so, at the last minute, I decided to add an extra loop to my run. Got home on 10.1k and was amazed I'd done it!

I downloaded zen labs and have been using that with Strava. I can run about 6k maybe a bit more. I feel like it will work but I'm definitely not going to run 10K one day and not realise! I'm still finding it quite hard and I'm slow. But I'm determined so fingers crossed will just keep going and get there in the end.

If you are finding your current distances quite hard and feel you are going slow, maybe a training programme like the one I'm using that consists of different types of training runs might help.
I'm using the BUPA half marathon programme, but I've just looked and there is a 10k one for people who can already run 5k.
It varies the types of runs and involves some speed work, so for example there's an 'easy run', a Tempo run, interval running and a 'long run' each week, slowly building you up to your 10k

Will have a look, thank you. I did 7k for the first time this morning so I'm happy that at least I'm making some progress. Think the aim of the zen labs app is to do 10K in 60 minutes which is unlikely as it took me nearly 50 minutes to do the 7k but at least I'm improving

I also think running with a friend (you are allowed to run with one friend at the minute) is helpful, as it makes the time go much more quickly.
Also if there is a local run club, when not in lockdown, it's so encouraging! Before this recent lockdown we were allowed to run in a group of 6, it's a nice change to running solo every run

ohhhhitsme · 11/02/2021 10:20

And well done on 7k

fredred · 11/02/2021 11:02

I would love to have someone to run with but I have to run early before work. Hopefully when we are out of lockdown I can do the local park runs or see if there is a club nearby.

Something that worked for me...
I 'followed' somebody else's runs on Strava (wasn't necessarily a friend), and it spurred me on.
So when I seen they had ran x km, it gave me a push to go and do more. Not saying that this was more than they had achieved, just more than I'd achieved before, whether distance or speed. Watching their progress helped my own

Onedropbeat · 17/02/2021 20:37

How long is a typical 10k newbie time?

ohhhhitsme · 17/02/2021 22:13

My first one was 1hr 10 mins. I've done a couple more since then and am now at around 1 hr

Onedropbeat · 17/02/2021 22:20

I’m still averaging 38-40 mins for a 5k so thinking I need to speed that up before I attempt a 10k or I could be out hours Blush

ohhhhitsme · 17/02/2021 22:38

Maybe try mixing your regular 5k runs with some speed work; tempo runs, intervals and hill sprints are what I have incorporated into my training the last couple of weeks, and it's already making a difference

fellrunner85 · 18/02/2021 06:56

How long is a typical 10k newbie time?

For a woman, under an hour would be "good" for a first 10k. 60 mins to 75 mins probably average. My first 10k race was 65 mins and I was very proud of myself!

But you tend to progress so fast after the first one, if you keep it up, that it honestly doesn't matter. All the "fast" runners I know, started out with 10ks of an hour or more.

That seems so far away from what I think il be able to do

Is short legs an excuse for slowness? Grin

I’d need to shave off at least a minute per km to get there

ohhhhitsme · 18/02/2021 09:03

@Onedropbeat it does sound impossible but you'll honestly get there, and it usually happens quicker than you think. It wasn't too long ago I couldn't imagine doing a sub-30 min 5k.
Keep going 💪🏽

fellrunner85 · 18/02/2021 21:58

Totally appreciate it sounds hard at this point, @Onedropbeat, but just think - during c25k you go from no running at all, to 5k, in just nine weeks. Knocking a minute per km off your speed is an absolute breeze by comparison.

I've been there and I know how hard it is. I started c25k very overweight and unfit and not able to run at all. But I got through it somehow, managed my first 10k in 65 mins, and now run 10k in 42 mins. At one point I honestly couldn't run 5k in that... but if you keep going it really does get so much easier.

Premier12 · 17/05/2021 14:39

How are you getting on OP? Did you get your 10k?

mymymy0 · 28/03/2022 08:52

I know the post is over a year old, but how did you get on OP? Any tips? I'm hoping to run 10k/further distances ASAP
