Sprained ankle, can't run, feeling so low. Alternatives?

I am feeling so miserable. I started running last year in Oct. Did too much too soon and hit 13 miles by 1st Jan and did another 13 miles week after. I now have sprained my ankle and need to rest it.

I miss the adrenaline and endorphins after a long run. I am truly miserable.

What else can I do or is just a matter of sitting it out.

I am doing core work and balance work where I can to help when I am back out running.

Thanks.

Do you have a bike. Get a turbo trainer and use your bike? Continue with your core strength work. Do some weights

I would also suggest cycling.
gentle stretching and test as well.
hopefully you can go on a gentle walk soon and slowly re-start running in a couple of weeks.
but do take it slowly.

Thanks @Cornishmumofone @redcandlelight

I will order a turbo trainer and up the weights a bit more.

I really miss being outside and the adrenaline so so badly. DH thinks I am depressed so I'm happy to try anything. Stupid ankle.

You have my sympathies op. I run and for the past 12 months have had injuries on and off (planter fascitis, dodgy ankle/calf/knee all on the same side so probably related) so I have had periods where I haven't been able to run and I've hated it, especially as there's not much else to do right now!

I walked when I could (some days I couldn't even do that), swam (my bf has a pool where he lives that has been open when we haven't been in total lockdown) and am currently doing yoga daily. Some positions I struggle with due to my knee but I work around it.

I grumble to myself the whole time I run but you can't beat the feeling afterwards can you? I would recommend that when your ankle is feeling better, get back into the running with C25k or similar. That's what I did when my pf got better and it stopped me doing too much too quickly.

Hi Op, i'm in a similar situation but its my calf/shin that is injured not ankle. I really miss the running and I'm also sad that I had finally built up to running 5km regularly no issue before this happened.
I have upped my strength training to try and get the adrenaline from somewhere could you get a few dumbells and a kettlebell and work on upper body strength? I have found throwing a heavy kettlebell around for 30 minutes gives me the same sort of high as running.

I buggered up my knee after being a runner for years - was so sad Sad I bought a cross-trainer because it is no impact and that has been great for me, knee feels a lot better so am going to start running again in March on nice weather days and use the CT when it's too dark/windy/rainy.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It is so frustrating

I am back out running but what helped was;

  • lots of yoga and corework and weights
  • yoga with Adrienne full body stretch everyday
  • rest for 2 weeks not even walking and only doing the above
  • went to running lab in West London and they made me a plan to get back out again
  • a sports massage which I think helped a lot as the following day my knee pain reduced by half.
  • foam rolling every day

Hope you all heal quickly and are back out running soon.

@zeddybrek how did you use the roam roller for your ankle injury, please?

*foam!
