... and potentially dangerous too!

So I've exercised all my adult life and love it. I love running and weights but also Pilates and yoga. Like much of the country I'm walking more than ever too.

Unfortunately since lockdown, for various reasons I've had on/off injuries and niggles, current Pain of the Month is something not right in my knee. So I've not ran since before Christmas, walking everyday to keep movement there and getting into a few more yoga sessions a week and adding in some balance and resistance work to try and build my strength back up. I'm lucky in that I've had the benefit of years chatting to PTs in the gym and a close friend of mine whose a PT and I've gained a great bank of exercises and techniques I can do at home with no equipment. I know how important form is and on the whole know how to do a move safely. I'm aware not everyone trying to exercise right now will have that experience and awareness.

To try and ring the changes I've been looking on YouTube and the like for some new sessions to try but my god! There is some real tosh out there masquerading as professionally led exercise! So much done quickly (you can't move for HIIT and variations on it), no attention to correct form and generally so much potential for injury. It literally seems like any donkey whose done a bit of googling of basic exercise who has some funky gym clothes and an aesthetically pleasing "space" to train in can set up a channel, plague us with adds then run round like a loony. And call themselves a trainer! Yes, I get I can turn off but it makes me cross this already saturated market is being taken advantage of and regular people trying to look after themselves could get hurt.

Or maybe I'm just very fed up of not being able to run Sad. Again.

Ahhhh rant over. I feel a bit better now!

Even Jo Wicks, who I want to love, never pays attention to technique!

Would like to add however of some gems I do go back to - Jessica Smith is great with lots of stuff that's low impact and kind to knees. And of course that MN fave, Yoga with Adriene. Both also feature cute dogs which aren't just there to distract from shit instruction.

I like bodyfit by Amy. She pays attention to form and i find her unannoying. I am far from expert though.

Fitness blender!

Range of exercises videos for all abilities and intensities

FireEngineGirl · 20/01/2021 20:01

Nike Training App. Wide variety, all free. Find a trainer you like and it becomes really enjoyable. Can be hard following on my tiny phone screen but I’ve become accustomed to it!

Ahh thanks all, I've heard of fitness blender but not the others. I'll look at all of those, appreciate it.

Unannoying, I like that! Grin

Yeah I Jessica smith, loads to choose from. I tend to do one on my non running days. Always focuses on form and different levels of ability. Joe wicks hurt my knees!

fredred · 26/01/2021 09:48

*I love

AnnaMagnani · 26/01/2021 09:51

I like Fitness Blender - not annoying, keen on technique and v cheap to sign up to their low impact package which did not hurt my knees, unlike practically eveything else.

mynameiscalypso · 26/01/2021 09:54

Totally agree. I actually pay for a couple (Fiit and Femme Method) despite all the free stuff out there because I'd much rather pay and know that I'm getting something that's safe than take my chances. It doesn't take much to do some serious damage. From one frustrated non-running runner to another, I feel you!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 26/01/2021 11:28

Ahhh thanks all. And yes, agree the free approach can often be the road to injury and grumpiness Grin

Blogilates has seemed quite good to me. Although I'm very much a beginner.

Notinhampshirenow · 29/01/2021 20:41

I like teambodyproject. Good combination of resistance and aerobic and Pilates thrown in as well. I started off with mr wicks many lockdowns ago but his lack of attention to technique made me fear for my back.

Try this. Grin
