Anyone else doing marathon-type training?

Hi folks - currently planning my first 2-hour run tomorrow - I have signed up for a 23 mile run this coming July - if it happens.

Wonder if anyone else is doing similar training - please share your pleasures and pitfalls. I'm finally getting close to a sub 60 minute 10K for once!

I am planning to do at least 30K but will make sure that there is at least two months between the longest run and the race. I certainly felt the difference between 10K and 15K more than 5K and 10K.

Like felrunner85 I find road marathons harder. I really struggle to eat at a constant fast-ish pace, whereas I'm fine eating on the uphills in a trail ultra

Hi everyone. I've got a 24 hour race in June (done in a team, it's huge fun), an overnight ultra in July, hopefully Great North Run in Sept, and an orienteering/role play type ultra in October - it sounds weird but I'm really looking forward to it.

All of these were postponed from last year. I want to do Manchester marathon but it clashes with Metropolis. I don't know if any spring marathons are likely to happen or still have places??

Hi Tea, Is be interested to know more about this role play run?

I do a lot of orienteering and will be doing to mini OMM in The Lakes in May 😀

JohnMcCainsDeathStare 2 months is a bit long, you'll either be knackered from constant long runs by the time of the race or off the boil totally. Your longest run should be 3 or 4 weeks from race day and then taper.

Blue5238 I loved it but this time I'm going to do some proper focused hill training because the elevation killed me - my achilles were so messed up by the end I was going up hill sideways because I couldn't bend my ankles. But I am a relative slow coach and was overtaken by several of the 50 mile racers by the end - who all looked far too bouncy and perky for my liking. However I finished well within the cutoffs which for my first ultra I was quite pleased with. It's definitely closer to 55k than 50 though. But this time I know what I am in for so there's gonna be some serious training this time haha.

Oooh Annoy it's called Metropolis - www.metropolis.run I am not sure of the status of entries, mine was rolled over from last year, but if you're on FB join the Beyond Marathon group and ask on there - Richard the RD is super responsive and will help. You can do solo or team, I'm in a team with a couple of friends. It's a new event I think, so I don't know how much info there is on it out there but the FB group will have some stuff.

Thanks! I’ve just had a look and it looks fab! Just a shame it’s in London as I live in the North. It’s not really the distance travelling down there, but the thought of running through an unfamiliar city at night 🙈

You might like this.... it’s an app (photo attached)

I know what you mean, I would definitely feel a bit weird about that and might take some of the fun out of it so I was happy that a couple of friends wanted to do a team. That app looks fun, cheers!

That Metropolis race looks really fun... Would love to hear how it goes. We are already signed up to Autumn 100 a week later so not one for this year for me.

I’m ultra marathon training... my first 100 miler in May (all being well).
Long distance running is just about covering the distance; It’s about practising your dual, your clothing and if you can doing a recce of the route.

Leading up to my first 100km event last September, I was doing a 25 - 30 mile training event every fortnight.

Fuel is key.. I eat real food, little and often: sandwiches, malt loaf, crisps, pasta shots, flap jack... And don’t underestimate the need to remain hydrated.

Has anyone ever got a rash a day or so after a long run? I got one and I still have it - did 20 km in the snow last weekend?

It doesn't hurt but its a bit disconcerting.

TriSeaSwim2021 · 28/01/2021 12:41

What sort of rash? Did you over exert yourself more than normal so it could be an immune response rash? Or a rubbing from clothing rash? I’d phone your GP if seriously concerned as it maybe symptomatic of something else. Take care.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 28/01/2021 17:59

I think it was that - I was ceramic polishing on Monday and that counts as steps - I feel it! So I did two 20000+ step days back to back! about 50000 steps in two days so I was feeling it.

A warning not to overcook it. I am missing strength training - my boys and DH are with my 24/7 so I cannot use my door gym and have to do 'smash and grab' work outs in the garden during the day with the kettlebellss
