Runner and getting knee/hip niggles aplenty ... recommend me some supplements please?

Evening all

Been running regularly for 4+ years now and bloody love it for a million reasons. In normal times I'd also weight train quite hard 1/2 weekly and with yoga a few times a week all seemed good.

Since Lockdown #1 and probably getting to gym 5 times tops whilst I haven't particularly increased my distance or frequency I've had on and off back and knee pain. The back pain is easing with regular yoga and stretching and using a pillow between my knees in bed. It's the knee one which I'm struggling to shift. It's hard to sit back on my feet if that makes sense, like there's pressure in it. Oddly I can easily run 13k on it and it's fine then plays up 3 days later!

So I'm thinking no resistance training has had an impact on muscles maybe not being what they were but I reckon it's time to start getting some supplements down me.

I'm not running until the knee discomfort has gone and been gone for a few weeks. Instead I'm gently walking daily and upping the yoga frequency focusing on toning yoga to hopefully help with muscle a bit.

From what I've googled it looks like the following could be a good start -

Glucosamine,
Omega 3,
Vit D

Apparently also Turmeric?

They're obviously not cheap to take daily so anyone have advice on whether they're the ones that could help, dose and best place to buy for good value?

I realise without an actual medical diagnosis this could be pointless but as I'm fine walking and pottering about and haven't the cash to throw at private scans/physio etc I thought I'd start here!

Another thought was I've got x 3 very stubborn verrucas right under where my toes are under the foot on the same leg and when they really throb I've a tendency to walk in a way that relieves the pain - could that be exacerbating it? Again, oddly I never feel them when running! Strange.

God I'm missing my running though Sad

Anyway, thanks for listening ... happy new year all Grin

Glucosamine worked brilliantly for me - no knee problems after I started taking it.

Ahh that's encouraging. My worry is my age (mid 40s) and bring in denial for a few years about odd twinges may mean I've buggered it up for running at least! Peri menopause probably doesn't help Confused

But I will add that to my "Definitely get" list as it's seems to appear pretty consistently in every article I read for joint health and ant inflammatory properties.

Is there any way you can improvise resistance and weight training? Even a regime of body weight squats, lunges, press ups and so on? Fill a backpack with stuff and use it for weighted squats and lunges perhaps?

Because it sounds as though the weight training was balancing out the running. Squats particularly will build and maintain good strength in the glutes (and abs) which support the knees.

Queen I think you're right ... I'm definitely going to hit resistance training again at home. It's a coincidence that the first time I all but stop weights all together is the exact same time the discomfort starts Confused

I’m a physio and ALL runners get strength exs from me! Especially those who are female and heading into/in menopausal years. Your body has got to have the muscle strength to absorb the impact. There are loads of online classes, using resistance bands or weights for extra umph is good. Good luck!

Iwan that's interesting ...I've been feeling a bit worried that I'd done something permanent. I can walk fine and it's not bothering me when I last ran (2 weeks ago). It's when I try kneeling back fully on my feet or occasionally when I'm standing with my knee slightly bent it twinges. I'll definitely take your advice.

I'm hoping if I focus on regular walks, resistance a few times a week and yoga too the problem may heal. I had an awful dream last night my knee turned to mush and collapsed Confused. Makes a change from the reoccurring teeth falling out one I guess!

I've been looking at supplements through Get Nourished ... you do a quick online consultation and sign up for a pre mixed gummy containing the supplements your body needs, one per day.

Not cheap (£30 a month) but I wouldn't have to worry about how 2 or 3 different pills may interact with each other. Includes Vit D and ingredients for anti inflammation although not glucosamine.

Oh, they're 3D printed. How on earth can you ingest something printed? I can't get my head around that!

An6 thoughts? Am I just being a sucker for the cool packaging?! Grin
