C25Ker - I need some advice

Hello!

I'm a total fatty, but have, by some miracle, managed to get all the way to week 7 of couch to 5k without a failed run.

I've slogged at it and always managed to complete it. So today is run 1 of week 7, 25 minutes run. I did this on Sunday, so I've done it before. But today, my legs just wouldn't carry me. I ended up giving up after 13 minutes. :-(

So now I'm feeling really defeated and cross that I didn't keep pushing myself, but in the moment I didn't feel I could.

So what do I do now? Do I just continue the other runs in the week and hope I can do them? Or do I leave it a day and try again for run 1?

I'm so disappointed in myself!!! Thanks!

Don't feel disappointed. You still did a run! Sometimes, usually if I don't pace myself properly, I give myself a walking break, catch my breath and try again. You might have just gone out a bit fast and not been able to maintain that pace yet. Or you just might not have been feeling it and going home was the right call. Personally, I'd just try and forget about it, be pleased you went and ran at all and go again in a couple of days. I would repeat it, just to prove to yourself that you can. Take it easy, put some good songs and just go for it!

I think yes have a couple of days off then try again. I find I’m really affected when I’m due on for a couple of days I can barely shuffle 5K when I can quite easily run 15k and do at least once a week. Those are the runs I cut short, then I come home and eat chocolate Grin

Embracelife · 15/12/2020 19:37

It s fjne!
Just repeat another day
Take it slower
If you walk in the middle so be it

vixb1 · 15/12/2020 20:05

Ok thanks all! Total over reaction on my behalf clearly! Grin

Good to hear that everyone has ups and downs and some days it just isn't happening!

I still got out, did a bit of running, got a bit of air, stretched my legs. Nothing lost I guess.

I'll try again on Thursday. Onwards!

Carry on! Even when you become a seasoned runner you’ll have days like this.

PaddyF0dder · 15/12/2020 20:08

Congrats! That’s fantastic progress.

Not every day can be your best.

Take a day or two, until your legs feel up to the challenge. Then repeat that run. If your legs are sore, wait until they’re not. No point in injuring yourself.

Don’t be hard on yourself. One “bad” day doesn’t devalue your progress.

pinkbalconyrailing · 15/12/2020 20:13

it's fine to have an off day.
I found the transition from 20 minutes running to 25 really hard.
just try again another day.

Alonelonelyloner · 16/12/2020 20:01

Ok, speaking as someone who ran for years and did. long distance running (can't run to the bus stop now mind), some days I'd struggle to do 2k! And would walk and go home.
Everyone has a lousy run day. Even Paula Radcliffe! You're doing bloody fantastic! Don't be discouraged. It was a single run. You were tired. Bodies do that.

Thankssomuch · 16/12/2020 20:03

Even a bad run is better than no run at all! Stick with it after a day or so of rest. You have done brilliantly and owe it to yourself to keep going.

vixb1 · 16/12/2020 20:37

Thanks everyone! Such encouraging messages! I'm going to get out there again tomorrow morning and see how I get on 🤞🤞🤞

I've run about 11 half-marathons... some days 3k feels like it's going to kill me (or at least my calves Grin )

Sometimes you just need a little more rest than usual.

lastqueenofscotland · 16/12/2020 23:01

I’m a “good” runner (fairly quick, several marathons) I’ve lost track of times I’ve thrown in the towel. Don’t worry! These things happen.

yawnsvillex · 16/12/2020 23:27

You've done amazing!! Please don't be defeated.

Some days are like running in treacle ... yet some days I can fly, literally.

Don't give up .... just park it and start again.

YOU CAN AND WILL DO IT.

Trust in the programme Grin

vixb1 · 17/12/2020 09:18

Update... I did it!!!!

25 mins without stopping. Yes!!!

Thank you so much for your encouragement and reassurance, I definitely would not have got back out there without it.

So proud of myself! Off to have a cup of tea to celebrate! Grin

SmileYAY!!! Well done you!

boredsolicitor · 18/12/2020 07:43

I am c25k fattie too but since I first did it about 3 years ago I have lost about 3.5 stone . Still a bit of a chunk though .I find it harder to run on very cold days . I just feel a bit more breathless somehow . Perhaps that affected your run ? but well done for having another go . It's so satisfying - you're almost there!

pinkbalconyrailing · 18/12/2020 07:48

I don't run if it's colder than 5 degrees outside. if I do I get a bloody/metallic taste in my mouth for a day or so.

UnaOfStormhold · 18/12/2020 07:56

Fantastic news. I did find as I got into the last few weeks of the programme I needed a few extra rest days for recovery - listen to your body and take it easy.

eurochick · 18/12/2020 08:17

Everyone has off days, including Olympic athletes. Things like hormones, hydration levels, tiredness can all affect your performance. It's totally normal to have the odd day when it just doesn't feel right.

Squiz81 · 19/12/2020 22:27

Yep I agree with everyone else, some days it just doesn’t happen! Have a rest and then re do that run.
