Knee pain during Pilates

Hi everyone. (: I've had a tricky year with lots of aches and pains (mostly back pain) and I've finally got into a good routine with a Pilates class that I love! Doing twice a week atm.

I started noticing that my knees hurt when I do glute bridges, and now they ache when I do more of the moves like lunging. I make sure that I tense my glutes and when doing squats/lunges that my knees don't go past my toes. Is there anything else I should be doing that I'm not?

They also seem to ache outside of class when I'm walking sometimes. I'm a bit worried about ignoring it and making it into a problem as I did this previously with a Mortons Neuroma.

Thanks for any advice. :)

Which form of Pilates are you doing? I have never done a lunge in a Pilates class- I've had 4 different teachers over the years.
Pilates shouldn't hurt if done correctly, you need to ask for an alternative version of what you are doing.

Thanks for reply @78percentLindt, appreciate it. (: I've emailed the instructor to ask for an alternative or where I might be going wrong. We occasionally do some gentle lunge moves (remind me of one of the yoga warrior poses so perhaps instructor is borrowing a bit), but noticed it first with bridges which we do a lot more.

I'm also going to try doing calf raises and stretching calves/hamstrings ahead of next class. If anyone knows other things I can do myself to help I'd really appreciate it, I'd be gutted if I this sets me back when I've finally got into a good routine.

Oh also - it is mat pilates (not reformer). I'm not sure if it is a specific type as quite new to it. I do a mixture of classes (stretch and tone/core and back/dynamic).

Do you have flat feet or low arches? I do and have to make a real effort not to roll my feet and consequently my knees inwards when i do things like pilates in bare feet.

Ah thanks @emmathedilemma - I do wear insoles in my shoes to correct for pronation so this could be it! I'm doing to be much more conscious of this when I'm doing the exercises now.

My knees have been sore just walking around the house today. :( But hopefully that is just from over-doing it with bad form yesterday and they will sort themselves out when I correct.
