Exercise without a gym membership?

Aside from walks. I don't want to run in public because I would feel self conscious.

Is there anything I can do in the privacy of my own home that's effective?

Have a look at Les Mills on Demand. You can usually pick up a free 30 day trial. Lots of workouts on there from high energy to low impact/stretching. Some require equipment, lots don't.

DeviousLatte · 13/12/2020 21:41

Are you comfortable with basic exercises, like squat, lunges etc? If yes there's lot of free exercise in youtube / Instagram but if not I'd make sure you know right form before starting (to avoid injury)

Les Mills on demand. A huge amount of classes and many (e.g. body attack) don’t need any equipment. Everything from aerobic style classes to dance, weight lifting, step, yoga, meditation and classes for kids too. Music is great, very motivating and they give low impact options so each workout can be tailored to what works for you. No membership of a gym but there is a monthly fee of £11.95 though (but much cheaper than most gyms and you can do a 30 day free trial).

If avoiding gym membership is about the fee then there are various YouTube videos (eg equinox hiit on popsugar, yoga with Adrienne) you could try.

Even if you decide not to do it long term the les mills on demand free trial is worth it for learning basic good form of exercises as it has tutorials.

Yoga with Adriene

Both on You Tube for free

Downdog apps are great. You subscribe (but they do have sales sometimes) and get access to all their range. I use the yoga, HIT and barre ones. The barre in particular is incredibly effective for thigh / core / bum.

LooseMooseHoose · 13/12/2020 21:46

Oh and all you need is an exercise mat (and a dining chair for barre)

DangerMouse17 · 13/12/2020 21:48

Fiit app. Loads to choose from! About 20 quid a month but first 2wks free usually. Highly recommend

BrowncoatWaffles · 13/12/2020 21:49

DDP Yoga. It’s not zen-like calm yoga - more yoga positions mixed with Pilates, rehab moves and cardio bits. I pay £6 a month for the app, have been doing it for almost three years and (paired with a sensible diet) have lost six and a half stone.

I love it. Loads of variety and different instructors, workouts from about 15 minutes to over an hour (although I don’t ever do that long!) and I can do it without leaving the house like the antisocial woman I am!

ineedsun · 13/12/2020 22:04

Peleton - you don't need the bike!

Body coach for Hiit?
Lots of classes are online at the moment so could find a local one?

SantasNoReal · 13/12/2020 22:08

There are SO many community exercise instructors who are working online just now and cannot work indoors due to restrictions. There is often no financial help for them either. Look at local Facebook pages and ask around.

PinGwyn · 13/12/2020 22:09

I'm not a naturally fit person and have never enjoyed exercising but I discovered Team Body Project during lockdown and really enjoy their workouts.

Some are free on YouTube, there are free ones on their website and then more content for subscribers.

Houseplantmad · 13/12/2020 22:27

Look for Annie Deadman on YouTube or via her website. I think she's fantastic and I've been doing 4 workouts a week through her programmes (Blast) and on YouTube.

Todayisanewday75 · 14/12/2020 12:49

Body Project are great, as is Heather Robertson on YouTube

Glitterypants · 14/12/2020 12:57

Check local drama, dance and fitness places. Ours run online fitness classes (some circuits based, some dance based) which are brilliant. You can have your video off if you want. The classes we do are really cheap as well, and such a boost both mentally and physically. It feels like a class as well as there's usually a wee hello/goodbye bit of chat for anyone who wants to. I've done them all the way through since about April and never felt better.
