Clothes for (slow) jogging in the witner

Hi everyone

Just been looking at the thread from 7 November about winter running jackets. Most of you said in that thread that you don't wear a jacket, only hat and gloves. However, I'm really slow and out of shape and am a person who feels the cold a lot anyway - I definitely don't feel the temperature as 10 degrees higher when I job, maybe 5. I also like to combine jogging and walking so would need to be able to warm up for the walk back if I've reached my limit.

At the moment I wear the very thin short-sleeved top I used to wear for the gym, followed by a thicker top that's not really a sports top at all and a warm waterproof jacket. The two outer layers are obviously not meant for exercise and I suppose could be making things worse as I would be jogging in my own cold sweat after 10 minutes.

So, what would you suggest, at a reasonable price? I reckon I would carry on with the thin top first, then a thicker top, then a jacket (hi-vis?) over the top.

Do I need 'sports' hat and gloves, or are normal ones OK. I haven't needed these yet this year for the cold, but I do wear a hat when it's drizzling and of course my head overheats.

Also shoes, I've had to stop wearing my trainers as they have holes in the top and make my feet cold. For the last few days, I've been jogging in my walking shoes. Is this OK for my feet or do I need to buy special winter jogging shoes?

I'm also planning to buy a cheap light for my arm as I have to jog in the dark now.

It's 10 degrees here today, but it can get down to minus temperatures in Jan-Feb. I presume I'll just be doing Youtube videos by then, but if not, it would be good to have winter gear that can go from this temperature down to those ones.

"Get the rest of your body comfortable and your feet should be fine in most winter weather."

I'm not sure about that. Last time my feet were too cold I had a lot of clothes on the rest of me. I have bad circulation and have cold feet most of the time. I might try warmer socks with the mesh trainers, but I definitely can't wear normal socks and those trainers any more.

I run cold too, and aim for 5° of difference not 10.
So, I wear a cotton beanie from H&M that cost 3.99, a long sleeved running top from eBay /or a Merino long sleeved baselayer if it's below 10° (also from ebay), yoga tights from tkmaxx, a sweatshirt over the top until I warm up enough (15 minutes yesterday, at 8°). I've also been wearing gloves in the last week (2.99 acrylic children's gloves from Sainsbury's).
I don't have money to spend on something I may not stick with!

Gwenhwyfar · 24/11/2020 18:16

IveSeen - I'm going to buy some cheap things, but if I end up not jogging, I presume I can wear them around the house or as athleisure and just pretend I go jogging :)

Smile. I have found my Decathlon warm leggings great for all this outdoor covid stuff.

IveSeenThings · 25/11/2020 10:26

That's v true MsMartini! MIL wears Merino baselayers when we walk in the park, so I can see things like that getting used. Hi-vis vests or chest lights not so much Grin

MsMartini · 25/11/2020 12:21

We could set a new trend Smile.

I’m overweight and slow 12/13 mm but find that I don’t need hat/gloves/ fleecy leggings unless its sub zero. Yes, I might start off feeling a bit chilly when its cold ...but I generate an awful lot of heat after the first 5-10 minutes ! At the moment I’m either in a long sleeve top or base layer and tshirt ...but I often end up pushing up my sleeves by the end . I find walking socks are the best for warm feet, but just make sure there is enough room in your shoes for when your feet swell.

Gwenhwyfar · 25/11/2020 16:54

Yes, I think I must feel the cold a lot more than you Rainyday. In my two layers and coat I start to feel warm after about 15 minutes, but with about 5 minutes to go it's not worth stopping to take my coat off.
I haven't needed cap and gloves yet for jogging (I had them on today for walking), but my hands have been quite cold so I can see it happening soon.

Update: I bought the running tights and long sleeved top from Decathlon.
Today I jogged when it was 3 degrees with some wind and light rain. I'm proud of myself just for doing that. In the middle of the day, not at night.
However, I wore, the tights, a sports top, the long-sleeved top, my thick anorak AND for the first 5ish minutes kept my non-sport chunky jumper on. Others in the park either didn't have a coat or had a very light rain jacket. I obviously need much more coverage than other people. I'm going to look for a padded running jacket rather than a rain one and maybe another middle layer.
I had my hat and gloves on most of the time as well, but this was my first time jogging in such conditions and maybe I'll get slightly more used to it.

Gosh, I thought I was a cold jogger...that is a lot. You could look at ski thermals (reduced in Decathlon atm). I wear their mid-layers for strength training outside, and occasionally running if very cold.

Sometimesonly · 01/12/2020 10:39

Following as I have only been running for a month and don't actually have any "proper" running stuff. I am VERY slow and alternate running with walking. Today it was 4 degrees and I had leggings, t-shirt, sweatshirt, sleeveless body warmer (are they still called that?), neck muff, face mask and dd's woolly hat. Legs were a bit cold though - off to investigate winter leggings.

"Today it was 4 degrees and I had leggings, t-shirt, sweatshirt, sleeveless body warmer (are they still called that?), neck muff, face mask and dd's woolly hat."

I think I still beat you because, while I didn't have a neck muff, I did have sleeves on my jacket.

I'm still amazed I even went out jogging in 3 degrees and rain though!

You’ve done bloody well, OP!

I’m a slow runner too. I may or may not have been mooching on Lijkk’s ‘slower than 12.5 mph?’ comment all bloody week Grin

But we’re faster than the ones sitting on the couch!

Redcrayons · 01/12/2020 13:06

I’m getting a sweat on just reading that list.

Each to their own, if it works for you, then keep at it.

fellrunner85 · 01/12/2020 13:42

I think all of us are slower than 12.5mph, @lunanorth! Grin

LunaNorth · 01/12/2020 13:57

GrinBlush

Minutes a mile, I should say Grin

Iamblossom · 01/12/2020 14:05

In this weather I run in a long sleeved gym top, a short sleeved one over the top, run leggings, running gloves and a woolly hat. I get hot and sweaty with the hat on but I am glad of it for the first 2 or 3 km.

I run in a bright pink lightweight zip up jacket if it is raining and like a PP a cap rather than a woolly hat to keep the rain off.

In "normal" weather I always run with a headband to catch the sweat/keep my hair out of my face/hold my headphones in my ears!

I have just bought the warmer running decathlon top a PP posted though, so looking forward to that - I did think "I have about 6 of those in the loft that I ski in" as I was pressing buy, but my running tops get smelly, so probably wouldn't want to ski in them anyway (if I ever get to go skiing again that is, but that's another story [sad face])

MsMartini · 01/12/2020 14:52

Just back from an 11k at 10.44 min per mile. I wore Decathlon long-sleeved warm running top, Decathlon ski mid-layer jacket which went off and on, thin hat and gloves (ahem, Decathlon), and - you guessed it - Decathlon runwarm running tights. It was sunny in places but I definitely needed all that. I am finding this fascinating - I saw people out in shorts today, some not running much faster than me!

fellrunner85 · 01/12/2020 15:06

I was out in shorts today, Ms Martini - and this was 6am while it was still freezing (quite literally freezing; all the cars were frozen up!)
It was cold to start with but I get warm pretty fast. I had on a vest, shorts, long sleeved base layer and gloves. No hat, never a hat Grin

Gwenhwyfar · 01/12/2020 16:29

"I was out in shorts today, Ms Martini - and this was 6am while it was still freezing (quite literally freezing; all the cars were frozen up!)"

Shorts when it's freezing? This is my idea of hell.

"You’ve done bloody well, OP!"

Thanks Luna! At heart am I complete non-exerciser and those times in my life when I have managed to exercise, it's been in a warm gym. I never thought I'd be out in the cold and rain so I'm amazed.
I don't know for how much of the winter I can keep this up though.

I‘m always genuinely fascinated by what other runners wear. For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been going out in the morning with quite a good frost on the ground so it‘s freezing or there abouts - I’m wearing and am finding perfect...long leggings, a really thin long sleeved top with another really thin long sleeved but higher neck top over the top, baseball cap and thin gloves. I run over really open fields and there can be a bitter wind, but I find gloves and a couple of thin layers to be ideal. I‘m going to order a band to keep my ears warmer, but find any sort of proper hat to be massively too warm.
A couple of weeks ago I was still out in cropped leggings and had a couple of walkers exclaim in horror that I had bare legs! 😂 They actually shouted at me to tell me!

TheHoundsofLove · 01/12/2020 16:38

fellrunner They‘d have had a fit if they‘d seen you in your shorts!

Gwenhwyfar · 01/12/2020 16:40

"I‘m always genuinely fascinated by what other runners wear."

I'm a beginner slow jogger though, not a runner. And even just walking to town, I need to wear more clothes than other people. I'm cold until about 28 degrees when I then switch to being too hot. (Have never jogged outside in the heat though).

In this weather, I run in a knackered old longsleeved merino top, thick leggings, an equally knackered ex-windproof, gloves and a woolly hat that my teenager would no longer be seen dead in.

DH goes out in shorts, ankle socks and a vest top. Nuts, I tell you.
